Vagabon, Dolly Valentine and Wished Bone

Another quick video post for tonight. Starting from New York City with Laetitia Tamko aka Vagabon. Her new self-titled album came out on the 18th of October on Nonesuch Records and it’s rather spectacular. I’m borderline obsessed with this single Every Woman and can easily listen to it on repeat for an hour. Lino Asana made a gorgeous music video and it’s a perfect fit for this song.

Moving on to Los Angeles, California. Lately another big favourite of mine has been the latest single Flowers on the Highway by Dolly Valentine. I’ve followed their singles throughout the year on the playlist, but Dolly Valentine deserves far more love, because all singles have been wonderful. Maybe it’s partly because the song has the words Rhode Island on it, but this somehow reminds me of The Softies. Anyway, it’s really beautiful and I can’t wait to hear more of her songs.

Let’s stay in LA to wrap this quick video post with one of the advance singles of the new Wished Bone album Sap Season that is due out this Friday 1st of November. All singles have been winners, so I have high expectations for this one. This beauty is called Trees We Couldn’t Tell The Size Of.

D.H. Scott and Zachary Lucky

I need to make some kind of final spurt during this next month or so, if I’m going to feature everything that I loved during the year. Let’s begin with another short double feature. We shall begin from Albuquerque, New Mexico with one of my new favorites D.H.Scott. Kind of accidentally stumbled upon his 2019 album My Body Longed For the Summer a while ago and instantly loved it. It reminds me a bit of that Wesley Randolph Eader album from a few years ago. Or well maybe they both just have a bit of Townes Van Zandt in them. Anyway, it’s a wonderful album full of great folk songwriting. A bit of hidden gem at least in my corner of the world, but hopefully not for too long.

Traveling on to Canada to meet up with one of my long time favourites Zachary Lucky. His new album Midwestern was recorded live off the floor in Hamilton, Ontario and came out on the 18th of October on Wroxton Recordings. It sounds warm, beautiful and true and the songwriting is strong throughout the record. It’s early days, but definitely feels like its his finest record to date. Here’s a couple of awesome examples. A live video of Sometimes I Wonder (How I Got This Far) and the album opener There Was A Time When I Used To Run.

Matt Dorrien, Kyle Cox and Joan Shelley

The progress has been slow for various of reasons, but I’m still here listening and loving music with all my heart. Here’s another set of wonderful songs that have done their part in dividing my world into something manageable. Starting off with the latest single Teddy Wilson from the great Portland-based songwriter Matt Dorrien who made one of my favorite records of 2018. It’s a gorgeous ode to jazz pianist Teddy Wilson and gives us a beautiful kindhearted escape from this crazy world. The single is out and available on Mama Bird Recording Co, so hit that bandcamp link for the single and the 2018 album if you missed it at the time. But now it’s the time to gently sway in the arms of this wonderful song. Everyone needs such moments of beauty and comfort in order to find the strength to carry on fighting for what is right.

Carrying on with the dance theme and next we are having a slow dance with Nashville songwriter Kyle Cox. We are not far away otherwise either, because his new album Perhaps One Day is a beautiful timeless love letter to his family and an ode to the jazz groups of 30s and 40s. It’s a tremendous album from first note to last and I love it wholeheartedly. Here’s Midnight Dance from the album that came out the 16th of August. Listen to / buy the whole beautiful record by hitting the links on the player.

This little blog post was dedicated to the slow dance and there’s no better way to wrap this one than the song The Sway from the awesome new Joan Shelley album Like The River Loves The Sea. The album came out on 30th of August on No Quarter Records and it’s one of my favorite records of this fall. This brilliant Lost River Sessions performance of album outtake The Sway just surfaced a few days ago. So here’s Joan Shelley and Nathan Salsburg giving a most perfect ending to this round up of songs of romance and slow dance.

Austin James Craig – Ghosts of Ohio

This morning took a beautiful surprise turn when I saw Austin James Craig’s post on my feed. He is a great singer-songwriter from Akron, Ohio. I really loved his EP some years ago and I’ve been eagerly waiting to hear more of his songs. Now that wait is over, because he released a new album Ghosts of Ohio on the 11th of October. I haven’t had the time to listen a whole lot at this point, because first I had to battle through the workday. I still wanted to do my part in getting the word out, because this is major news on the onechordnet scale. Plus based on a few quick listens, it’s wonderful and full of beautifully arranged captivating folk / americana songs. Ghosts of Ohio is available on all streaming platforms and at bandcamp (as name-your-price download). This is Calgary from the new album.
