OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #260

It’s December and therefore most of my spare time goes to pointless but fun year end lists. I will do one more of these next weekend and after that the new music weekly will be on hold until early or mid-January. If it even continues. I guess it will.

Album of the week is probably the new Gonzalez Smith collaboration. Also very fond of the Emmett Morris EP. Other great new album releases came from Pop Filter, Sarah Goldstone, Zach Russell, Maiden King, Taco Tapes (well this a week or two ago, but I missed it) and Thorsten Nesch (EP). Oh and a great Adam Green tribute too.

The Finnish section of the playlist has the new album from Voikukat plus a singles from Pillow, Penniless, Nuoruus, Samanna, Vellamo, Viitasen Piia, FER, Honey Crisp and Tuomo & Markus. Billy Reeves should be mentioned here too, because his great new single is taken from the Mummypowder song vault.

The international song of the week is the new Frontier Ruckus single. Long time readers know that it’s my favorite band of the past decade or so. So thrilled to get a new Frontier Ruckus album in early 2024. Another big favourite Clay Parker and Jodi James also have a new album on the way with a first single out now. It looks like there’s plenty of reasons to keep the blog alive for another year. Other early faves came from The Mellons, Matt Michell Music Music Co, Shawn Hess, The Satchel Kid and BenBen. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. One more of these next weekend. Maybe some year-end list action before that, but that’s not a definite promise. But if I have enough time and energy, I try to do the EP list or Finnish album list next week. Love love love.

A few Bandcamp cuts for the lovely non-streamers:

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #259

I made a surprise return to Apple Music a couple of days ago. Most likely just a temporary thing, but for a month or two this new music weekly and the forthcoming year-end round ups will be on Apple as well (and Tidal and Spotify as usual). I just wanted to give Apple another test run while I ponder my options.

A pretty quiet release week, because it’s Thanksgiving in the US. So this playlist is shorter than usual (did I hear a sigh of relief). There’s new albums from Ian M Bailey, Wurld Series, Guided By Voices, Feeling Figures and Haley Heynderickx & Max Garcia Conover (Fifth Anniversary Edition). Plus a pretty cool Light in the Attic compilation.

A bit busier here in Finland. There’s new albums from Orvokki, (Sulut), Musta Huone and Grant Wood Company. All great in their own way. So far I’ve spent most time with (Sulut) and I really like that one. A bunch of singles too from The Wonderminers, Juppe, Inginmaa/Hypnomen, Kaita IsĂ€ri SeppĂ€lĂ€ and Slack Bird. A new song from The Wonderminers is always a big deal and that is probably my favorite song of the week altogether.

A few international single gems too like a double from Mike and The Moonpies. Other faves came from Bonnie Prince Billy, Smith and Tegio, Lola Wild and BMX Bandits.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. You can do that now on Apple too. It all matters. Back next week with another one of these. That might be the last new music weekly for 2023. Maybe I’ll do the week 49 too, if there’s a lot of new stuff. We’ll see. EOTY stuff will take some time and I need a break too at some point. But 1 or 2 weeks the normal way. Love love love.

1. Ian M Bailey – California Desert Sundown (We Live in Strange Times, 2023)
2. Wurld Series – Friend to Man and Traffic (The Giants Lawn, Meritorio Records, 2023)
3. Guided By Voices – Puncher’s Paradise (Nowhere to Go but Up, GBV Inc, 2023)
4. Feeling Figures – Seek and Hide (Migration Magic, Perennial, 2023)
5. Haley Heynderickx & Max GarcĂa Conover – How Does the Horse Go (Among Horses III Fifth Anniversary Edition, Son Canciones, 2023)
6. Steve Gunn & Bridget St John – Rabbit Hills (Light in the Attic & Friends Compilation, Light in the Attic, 2023)
7. Bonnie Prince Billy – Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You (single, Drag City, 2023)
8. Mike and the Moonpies – Three Marlenas (single, Prairie Rose Records, 2023)
9. Smith and Tegio – Shine (single, 2023)
10. Lola Wild feat Robert Chaney – Here I Go (single, Tip Top Recordings, 2023)
11. BMX Bandits – Setting Sun (single, Tapete Records, 2023)
12. The Wonderminers – Move Me (single, 2023)
13. Juppe – Andy, I Have Your Lighter (single, Soliti, 2023)
14. Inginmaa/Hypnomen – Sukellan (single, Stupido Records, 2023)
15. Orvokki – Narkissos (Kasvotusten, Luova Records, 2023)
16. (Sulut) – Hukassa (Maailman kaunein paikka, (Sulut) Records, 2023)
17. Musta Huone – Kuun palvojat (Valosaasteen sekaan, Paa jotaki & This Is Not a Dog, 20239
18. Kaita IsĂ€ri SeppĂ€lĂ€ – Psykologinen ongelma (single, Soit Se Silti, 2023)
19. Slack Bird – Koira (single, 2023)
20. Grant Wood Company – All This Time (Once Again) (Cracked Up in a Promised Land, Karhuvaltio Records, 2023)

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #258

A busy weekend at the Indie-Iltamat indoor festival, but here’s the new music I managed to listen. I’m sure I missed a lot of stuff.

New Matthew “Doc” Dunn is the album of the week. Other great album releases this week came from Bastards of Soul, Frog, Jon Rauhouse & Blaine Long, Mo Troper (Jon Brion covers), Spearmint, Jeremy Squires, Dori Freeman, Niclas Frisk & The 1969’s (soundtrack for Börje series), Gregory Dwane and The Terminal Buildings. I also included Myriam Gendron’s album that originally came out 2014, because it just got a new UK/Euro release on Basin Rock. That would easily be album of the week / month / year, but I already know that by heart. If you missed it before, please do give it a listen because it’s an amazing album.

A lot of gorgeous Finnish releases this week. The highlight for me is the new Ite Eerola album. Again written and recorded in just three days. Somehow they are always able to make a great record in such a short time frame. One of my favorite artists in the Finland/World at the moment. We also got excellent new album from Knife Girl, Jaakko Eino Kalevi and Punainen Planeetta plus singles from Amuri, Mikko Joensuu, Oho!, Voikukat, Antti Autio, Brian & Helvetin Peruna, Rebekka Holi and Madame T & Siniset Veljet.
