OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #342

Another late Sunday edition, because I’ve been going to live concerts three nights in a row. A huge release week once again. I may have to throw in the towel when it’s time to do the AOTY list. Well I know I won’t, but it will be extremely hard because there’s so much great music.

I’ve barely listened full albums yet so Joan Shelley, John Calvin Abney and Jesse Lovelock can split the album of the week honors. All seem gorgeous on quick listen. But there’s a whole lot of others too and in the end my favorite might even be something else. There’s new albums available from Dylan Earl, The Pink Stones, Otis Gibbs, Winter McQuinn, Wilder Maker, Kyle Cox, Kitba, Janet Simpson, Jesse Summers, Generifus, Frog, The Cowboys, Wednesday, The Prize, Black Guy Fawkes, Everett Parker, Malin Pettersen, Joe Nolan, Cruise Control, David Robert Pollock and Jim Bryson (EP). I made even two cover collages and still couldn’t fit them all in.

My favorite part is still the Finnish section, because there’s a new Kristiina album and they’ve been one of my absolute favorite bands in the world during the last few years. Another huge one is the debut album from A.Reikko & Kaupungin ääni. Also tipping my hat for Topi Saha for powerful cover version of Mikko Perkoila’s song Säästön hinta. To round up the Finnish part of this, we have great albums from Aili Järvelä and Juppe plus a single from Susanna Leppänen. Update: Yikes, forgot the comeback single from all-time favorite Sweatmaster. Already shared it on my social media earlier, but somehow managed to not include it here. Shame on me. But it’s there now.

International single of the week will be split between long time favorite Courtney Marie Andrews and new favorite Mia Wilson. Oh that Mia Wilson album is going to be special, if the whole thing is as amazing as these first two singles. Other early favorites came from Wharfer, Nick Shoulders, Norma Dream, Mariel Buckley… again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. A reminder that Caleb Caudle and The Sweet Critters will be in Finland next week. Therefore I will be in Helsinki on Saturday and this will again take place late on Sunday. Unless I’m too worn out and tired after the travel. Always amazed how bands cope with the travel. I’m easily worn out after a couple days in a city two hours away and they can do months long tours with long drives each day. Tough job. But yeah until next Sunday unless we meet in Helsinki on Saturday. Love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #341

Another very late Sunday edition of the new music weekly. A weekend full of live music (and some basketball), so this was little bit on the back-burner. And somewhat overwhelming to start compiling this 7pm on Sunday, but here’s what I managed to put together.

Carson McHone made the album of the week. This is quite different than the high energy rock’n’roll live show I experienced few weeks ago, but equally great. A big shout to Jordan Smart as well for making such a powerful protest album. And there’s many other great things too. We have new albums from Scott Ballew, Michael Hurley, Nicholas Jamerson, Sparrow Smith, Bror Gunnar Jansson, Ike Goldman, Twilark, Dao Strom, Lena Bartels, Lila Tristram, Fruit Bats, Emma Swift, Dancer, Liquid Mike, time thief (EP), Matt Moran, Miles Miller, Patrick Dethlefs, Shawn Camp, Kirby Baby, Josh Ritter, Margaret Glaspy, Asher White and Jens Lekman. That took a while to type let alone listen. Something do for the next few days, because I’ve only scratched the surface on most of them.

Big album release week in Finland as well. We have new ones from Rebekka Holi, Kärmes, Arppa, The Wrong Car, Brian and Vehje. Plus singles gold from Mitä helvettiä nyt taas, Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki, Paha Lucia, Muuan Mies, The Lovematches, Spotless Souls and Jonah Parzen-Johnson & Lau Nau (well this one’s is half Finnish, but I’ll make Jonah and honorary Finn here because he is making a record with Lau Nau on a Finnish label).

New Andres Miguel Cervantes song can be the single of the week. Don’t lock your AOTY ballots too early, because that beauty is coming out 1st of November. Some other early favs came from Adeline Hotel, Bobby Dove, 54 Ultra, Caged Animals, Renny Conti, Lefty Parker.. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. The blog will hit 24 years next week. A long time to do anything, let alone a music blog. We’ll see if I manage to make any kind of birthday post. But back next week with another one of these in any case. Might be another late one, because there’s live concerts that I want to attend on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And actually two events every day, so I need to figure out where to go on each day. Love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #340

A bit less heavy release week, but somehow I still I ended up with 65 songs. I might be in trouble during the busy September / October release schedule.

New Forrest VanTuyl is be the album of the week. There’s also new albums from Robbie Fulks, Ry Jennings, Greazy Alice (EP), Minta & The Book Trout, Big Thief, Small Forward, John Myrtle, Alien Eyelid, Cory Cross, Curtis Harding, Gwenifer Raymond, Brian Dunne and Grant Lee Phillips. Plus a beautiful tribute to Jason Molina. I don’t often feature the tribute albums here, because these are already longer than anyone will listen. But I love Jason Molina and a lot of big favorite artists on the album too. So an exception to the rule is in order.

On the Finnish side of things, we have albums from KIUSA, Lyyti, Metsäheikki and Nössö Nova. Plus singles from Michael Bleu, Hamina, Brian, Neiti Olga and Terika.

The big news of the week was that there is a new posthumous Luke Bell double album in the works. First single is now out and that’s of course the international single of the week. Make sure you also check out the lovely music video that Mike Vanata made from archive footage. Other big early favorites came from Jordan Smart, Alex Amen, Vanity Mirror, Lena Bartels, Dylan Earl, Corey Parsons, Julie Doiron, Daniel Romano, Rambling Nicholas Heron… again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. One more next week is an 23 year old music blog. Then 24 strikes. No plans to celebrate this year, but probably should come up with something for the forthcoming 25 year jubilee. Because that’s a long time to do anything, let alone a music blog. Love.
