OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #103

Another week, another new music weekly.

A bit more rushed effort this week. A few game sevens took some time away from the new music listening. But here’s some of the highlights that I did manage to listen.

Emily Barker and Bill Callahan albums were the big ones for me and both are awesome. Brittany Brooks is a new artists for me, but I’m liking her album a lot after a few spins. Long time favorite Matt Woods released a new EP and we also got great new albums from India Ramey, Tennessee Jet, Annie Dressner. Outside of the streaming services, Drew Danburry started a new cassette label and released a wonderful cassette-only album under the name Icarus Phoenix. You’ll find it from Bandcamp. Josienne Clarke also released more song treasures at Bandcamp and I’m sure there was quite a bit more on that lovely platform because it was a Bandcamp friday. Always worth noting that while playlists and Spotify are good for the introduction and expanding the listening habits, please buy the music that really matters to you. Anyway, here are all the international album / EP releases that were on my radar this week.

Brittany Brooks – Lend Me Your Hand
Emily Barker – A Dark Murmuration of Words (Everyone Sang / Thirty Tigers)
Bill Callahan – Gold Record (Drag City)
Matt Woods – Mornings After EP (Lonele Ones Records)
India Ramey – Shallow Graves
Tennessee Jet – The Country (Tennessee Jet Music/Thirty Tigers)
Annie Dressner – Coffee at the Corner Bar
Lomelda – Hannah (Double Double Whammy)
Josiah Johnson – Every Feeling on a Loop (ANTI)
Grant-Lee Phillips – Lightning, Show Us Your Stuff (Yep Roc)
Smug Brothers – Room of the Year EP
Beautiful Dudes – Nite Songs EP (Dowd Records)

+ Bandcamp only

Icarus Phoenix – Icarus Phoenix
Josienne Clarke – Historical Record vol. 3&4 Learning To Sail

The Finnish section is somewhat small this time around. There’s just the new singles from Message Field and The Phonochromes. Message Field song actually came out a week ago and I’ve had a cloud of guilt hanging over for a week, because I forgot to include it then. The playlist also revisits Amuri and Metsäheikki albums.

As for international singles, there’s plenty to love. A couple of big album announcements from long time favorites John Calvin Abney and Becky Warren. Pre-oders are up on their bandcamp and the first singles are on the playlist. Several other big favorites like J.E. Sunde, Luka Kuplowsky, Jerry David DeCicca, Daniel Romano, The Burning Hell, Sun June and Adrianne Lenker also released beautiful new songs. The list starts with a fairly new favorite Gus Clark & The Least of His Problems. They released a couple of wonderful singles this week. I found them from Western AF, which is pretty much the best youtube channel there is. Probably one of the better things in this internet thing altogether. All others would be worth a namedrop too, but you’ll find the songs on the list below.

That’s it for this week. This blog is 19 years old in a couple of weeks. No big celebrations planned this time around. I’ll save that for 20 years, if this blog and world still exists at that point. I think everyone’s has had more than enough of stream / online events at that point, so hopefully it’s an actual concert or something in that nature. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #102

Another week, another new music weekly.

This was quite a release week and it wasn’t possible to listen to everything before making this. But here’s some kind of attempt to round up most of the new releases of the week.

A lot of country music to love this week. Zephaniah OHora, Justin Wells and Colter Wall albums were all highly anticipated and they all are damn good. Some other kind of favourites too like Jeremy Squires, Caitlin Pasko and Rae Fitzgerald EP. Oh yeah and some gorgeous surprise b-sides from TK & The Holy Know-Nothings. And many other things. Here’s a full list of international albums that were on my radar:

This was also a brilliant Finnish release week. The biggest treasure is the debut album from Amuri. A really big deal for me and I love it so much. However, that’s not the only beautiful album release. Those Metsäheikki and Arppa albums are awesome as well. The playlist also has excellent new singles from Laura Moisio, Linkopii and Vuoret plus revisits The Sugarrush album that came out a week ago.

When it come to international singles there’s a powerful double from Adia Victoria and Austin Lucas early on. Some other personal favorites are new songs by Tiffany Williams, Laura Fell, Skyway Man and Girlatones. Just to name a few.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #101

Another week, another new music weekly.

This turned out to be a monster week, because we got a surprise release from The Sugarrush. I love this Finnish power pop band and together with The Posies and Teenage Fanclub they formed the backbone of my music taste and are one of the main reasons this website exists. Therefore I’m thrilled that the hardest rockin’ pop band released a wonderful new album. It was recorded a decade ago, but hey this music can’t get out of style because it was never in style. So if you are looking some fabulous loud guitar pop, listen to High Status by The Sugarrush. There’s also a few other Finnish beauties on the playlist. I’m especially fond of the new Lätsä single, but there’s also lovely new singles from Juha Mäki-Patola, Rohkeat kuvat, Joensuu 1685, Bad Sauna and an outtake from the brand new RULES album.

Moving on to the international album releases. There’s plenty to love this week. If you have followed the playlist over the past year, you’ve heard half of the songs from the Dolly Valentine album but now the album is out too. And because I’ve loved all singles, it’s no wonder that I love the album too. Then there’s new albums from new favorites like Juliet McConkey, Benchmarks, Evangeline Gentle, Maya Hawke, Bright Arcana, Trummors along with long time favourites like Guided By Voices, Old 97s, Hayward Williams and Steven Adams. Oh yeah and I somehow missed that El Goodo album a few weeks ago. Don’t know how I managed that because I follow them on social media and have all the older records. The only EP is from Rachel Angel, but it’s a really good one. Here’s the full list of international albums/EPs that were on my radar this week.

Benchmarks – Summer, Slowly
Dolly Valentine – How To Be Good (Holy Golden Music)
Juliet McConkey – Disappearing Girl
H.C. McEntire – Eno Axis (Merge Records)
Trummors – Dropout City (Ernest Jenning Record Co)
El Goodo – Zombie (Strangetown Records) <- released 7th of August
Bright Arcana – Bright Arcana in the Lowland Plains (Piasa Recordings)
Hayward Williams – Every Color Blue (Green Canoe Music)
Rachel Angel – Highway Songs EP (Public Works)
Maya Hawke – Blush (Mom+Pop)
Evangeline Gentle – Evangeline Gentle, Sonic Unyon Records)
Steven Adams and the French Drops – Keep It Light (Fika Recordings)
Guided By Voices – Mirrored Aztec
Old 97s – Twelfth (ATO Records)
Chuck Prophet – The Land That Time Forgot (Yep Roc)
Bright Eyes – Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was (Dead Oceans)
Jerry Joseph – The Beautiful Madness (Decor Records)
Pat Keen – Cells Remain (Birdwatcher Records)
Pop Filter – Banksia (Bobo Integral)
Siv Jacobsen – A Temporary Soothing
Eli Winter – Unbecoming (American Dreams)

And last but not least, the international should-be hits aka singles. A big favorite for me is the new Terry’s Paradise song. There’s also a song streaming from Ian Daniel Kehoe. He released three gorgeous albums on bandcamp a few weeks ago. I highly recommend buying them, but here’s an excellent taster. There’s also wonderful songs from Lydia Loveless, Bonnie Whitmore, I’m Kingfisher, VanWyck, War & Pierce, Matthew Ryan, Jeremy Ivey, Tomberlin, Lomelda, Victoria Bailey, Colter Wall. Just to name a few. These are all on this playlist, because they are all really good songs.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #100

Another week, another new music weekly.

Hey this is the episode #100. Time for a party. However, we might need to find another party playlist, because this one is again full of sad and beautiful ones. At least I didn’t start with Arlo McKinley’s wonderful song Suicidal Saturday Night, which is one of my favorites of the week. Anyway, thanks to everyone who has followed and listened to this new music weekly and playlist during the past two years. It is quite a task to compile this every weekend and takes hours to put together, so it’s nice that some folks seem to enjoy it. I wanted to reach 100 episodes before quitting, so now I’ll give myself a permission to quit whenever I feel like it. I don’t think that will happen anytime soon though, because I love music and enjoy going through all the new releases each week. So this will go on as long as I enjoy making it.

I did some statistic work too. There’s was way too many artists to count, but these labels have appeared most times on the playlist during the past two years. Presented in form of a pie chart, which makes as much sense as spending 100 weekends in a row compiling a playlist that a few people listens. No surprises here I suppose. The big personal faves Mama Bird Recording Co, Keeled Scales, Fluff and Gravy Records, You’ve Changed Records, Helmi Levyt, Soit Se Silti along with some of the great big indies. Of course the biggest one by far would have been “independent”. This might not be completely accurate, because my math skills are horrible. Plus some label info is also missing, because I just go with what is on Spotify. It would take far too long to search the name of the label if it’s not mentioned there.

And then on to the new music of the week. This was a wonderful release week. Kathleen Edwards released her return album, Arlo McKinley made his gorgeous Oh Boy Records debut, Sylvie Simmons and Kath Bloom released amazing albums, Will Johnson’s beautiful new record is now streaming too (last week on Bandcamp, which is obviously way better option than Spotify) and Zephaniah OHora’s future country classic is now available for us who pre-ordered on Bandcamp. A new single is streaming, so check that out and grap a copy from Bandcamp. Emma Swift made a fabulous album of Bod Dylan covers. You won’t ever find it from streaming services, but it’s available on her Bandcamp page. Then there are many other beautiful things like Lily McKown’s debut, new Ashley Ray album and so forth. Here’s a full list of album releases that were on my radar.

Kathleen Edwards – Total Freedom (Dualtone)
Arlo McKinley – Die Midwestern (Oh Boy Records)
Zephaniah OHora – Listening to the Music (Last Roundup Records) (on Bandcamp if you pre-ordered, elsewhere 28th of August)
Sylvie Simmons – Blue on Blue (Compass Records)
Kath Bloom – Bye Bye These Are the Days (Dear Life Records)
Will Johnson – El Capitan (Keeled Scales)
Ashley Ray – Pauline (Soundly Music)
Lily McKown – Backseat Driver
Merce Lemon – Moonth (Darling Recordings)
Eric Slick – Wiseacre (Slick Records)
Caitlin Kraus – What Rises
Kris Delmhorst – Long Day in the Milky Way
CJ Stranger – Hey Stranger
Terry Ohms – Smooth Sailing Forever (Cornelius Chapel Records)
Mad King Edmund – You Are Not Alone (Safe & Sound Recordings)
Skylar Gregg – Roses
Dana Gavanski – Wind Songs EP (Full Time Hobby)

Emma Swift – Blonde on the Tracks

Finnish section doesn’t have any new albums, but there’s a really hot run of fabulous singles from Suad, Litku Klemetti, Rosita Luu, Bizzarro & Jukka Nissinen, Sam Shingler and Eerie Deer. All pure gold.

There’s also plenty to love on the international song section. Daniel Romano has probably released about a dozen of great albums on Bandcamp this year, but there’s also one coming on You’ve Changed Records this fall. First single is out now. Long time favourites Hayden Desser and Justin Wells released new singles as did new favourites Kyle Cox and Emilee Emiko. The quality is again really high throughout the playlist. I usually try to make this a little top heavy, but this was again a week where I gave up and there’s plenty of gems all the way through. I for example love the songs my Emily Barker, Dawn Riding, Humbird, Brennen Leigh and Benchmarks.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.
