Another week, another weekly playlist.

Already the 30th episode of this silly weekly playlist. That’s already an insane amount of time spent on something that doesn’t have a whole lot of significance. But I don’t really mind that much, because this is always a good exercise and keeps me on the loop of what new music is out there. Oh and I do know that I still miss a ton of stuff each week, but at least somewhat less than before I started doing these every week.

My most anticipated albums this week were from Australian songwriter Julia Jacklin, UK’s country soul queen Yola and Californian folk rock band China. That just a tip of the iceberg though and the week gave us new albums from Adia Victoria, Apples with Moya, Emily Scott Robinson, Matthew Logan Vasquez, Vandoliers, Our Native Daughters, Susto, Luther Russell, Spencer Burton (acoustic version of his latest album). There’s also a song from a couple of older ones that I missed when they were released (Andrea Von Kampen and The Maureens).

The small Finnish section contains gorgeous new singles from Salainen avaruusohjelma and Lanai plus a song from the brand new M album Näytän missä asun that came out on Friday on Solina Records.

Again a bunch of magnificent new singles too. For example those Clara Baker and Caleb Elliot albums are shaping up to be awesome, because all of the advance singles have been so great. This week we also got the first taste from forthcoming albums by Steven Lambke, Aldous Harding and Justin Townes Earle. There’s also the latest single from Ian Daniel Kehoe now on the list. I still haven’t come into terms with the fact that I forgot to put it on this list a week ago. I’m ashamed. Oh and there’s a new song by Teenage Fanclub. They are #2 on my all-time favorite bands list, so a new song TFC song is always a big deal. And as usual, I could just as well namedrop all of these bands/artists, because I like each and every song on this playlist.

That’s it for this week. Sorry that I’ve been such a lousy excuse of a blogger for the last few weeks. Somehow this again feels like a struggle and even somewhat irrelevant to keep it up. It’s not even that I don’t have time, because I’ve spent like a trillion of hours hitting f5 on hfboards following NHL trade action. I’m still too stubborn to quit this though. I’m not sure whether that is a good thing or not. I’ll try to pull myself back together and fall in love with this again. Meanwhile there will be at least this one post each week. Hopefully something else too during the next week, but no promises whatsoever. Perhaps I should just come up with more daily, weekly, monthly features, because doing this weekly thing has become a routine. Even a routine that I enjoy. It’s just so easy to let things slide and therefore it’s good to have some structure that keeps me going.

Another week, another weekly playlist.

This was a big release week and I haven’t managed to listen everything yet. So there might even more good stuff missing than usually. The new Robert Ellis and Hayes Carll albums are the two big ones, but there’s so much more and most of these are awesome. This list includes songs from the new albums from Charles Wesley Godwin, Kalyn Fay, Harlem, Daniel Steinbock, Smug Brothers, Tullycraft (I missed this a week or two ago), Golden Daze, Lisa Papineau, The Long Ryders, Jerry David DeCicca (acoustic after party version of his 2018 album) and Big Joe & The Dynaflows. Plus some new EPs too from Bec Stevens, Francie Moon, The City Views.

The album I listened to the most is the new Steve Sloane album. It came out a couple of weeks ago, but it is now on this Spotify thing too. I bought a download of it too, because I try to support the music that matters to me.

There’s not much Finnish stuff on the list this time around, but quality over quantity. It will be an incredible year if these new Salaliitto and Hullu Ruusu albums won’t end up on my top 10 in December. Extremely highly recommend stuff, if you can master the Finnish language. And well even if you don’t, because music is a universal language.

Song of the week is the new Damien Jurado single and I’m thrilled that his new album will come out on Mama Bird Recording Co & Loose Music. I was also really moved by Le Ren’s powerful song, which is not brand new, but a new song and artist to me. There are also new singles from some forthcoming album that I’m so eager to hear (Caroline Spence, Daniel Norgren, Hand Habits, Julia Jacklin, Weyes Blood, John Paul White etc). As usual, everything else would also be worth namedropping on this text too. They are on this list, because I really like them. I even had to leave some out, because I didn’t want to make this any longer 40 songs. Soon I will probably give up and just let this expand even further. So much great music every week and I love that.

A bit later than usual, because I was on small vacation trip and just got back. I even thought about leaving this for tomorrow, but in the end wanted to push this through tonight. Maybe a little less of this pointless rambling because of that.

The most important album release of the week for me is the new album from Jeremy Quentin aka Small Houses. I must admit that I haven’t even listened to it yet, because it wasn’t on Spotify first (is now) and I only had the iPad with me on the trip so couldn’t download it either. The digital version is available on his Bandcamp as name your-price-download. Other new album releases that find their way on my radar were from Cass McCombs, Deidre & The Dark, Bob Mould, The Lemonheads (covers album Varshons 2), Mercury Rev (revisiting Bobbie Gentry’s album with awesome guest vocalists), Chris Rawlins, Jessica Pratt, Michael Chapman, The Late Great, Mackenzie Shivers, Charlie Faye & The Fayettes, Henry Jamison.

There’s again a small Finnish language lesson in the middle. There was a new album excellent album from Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki and magnificent singles from Maustetytöt, M and Tanssiva Karhu (this last one is a few weeks old, but I missed it then). That song by Maustetytöt became a bit of an addiction and a good kind of earworm. They fully deserve all the hype.

The singles game was also strong in the international charts. Esther Rose’s single Blame it on the Moon was my favorite song of the week, closely followed by the new one from the forthcoming album Anna Tivel album. Piney Gir, Rod Melancon, Kashena Sampson, I Was a King and Robert Ellis were some other big favorites. As usual, I like each and every of these songs and could just easily namedrop them all. But let’s name one more, because Emily Scott Robinson’s song is more powerful than all the rest together.

Update: Oh one more thing. I also started compiling my favorite Finnish songs of the year on one playlist called OCTA Finnish Songs of 2019. I probably won’t “promote” this, because I think it’s bad enough that I spam this weekly playlist every week. But if you only want the Finnish songs, there’s now this option too.
