Another week, another weekly playlist

Anniversary celebration is over and the blog returns to normal routine. Thanks again to every artists who made a video for the anniversary festival and every reader who watched them. If you want to revisit the action hit the links in the left sidebar. There’s a handy youtube playlist for easy browsing and sharing. I love each and every video and I’m completely stunned that 68 artists wanted to take part on the anniversary festival of this little music blog. But it’s time to start focusing on the next 18 years and I’ll start with the weekly playlist. This time there’s albums and songs from the past three weeks, because I did not have enough time to compile this playlist during the celebration. This also means that I probably forgot to include a lot of stuff and a lot of it even slipped under my radar (it wasn’t even really on for a while there). So feel free to hit me up, if something important is missing. I also couldn’t include as much singles as normally, because the list is way too long as it is. I will mostly likely return to the weekly update from now on. It’s a lot of work, but in some strange way it seems easier to do it every week.

Carrying on to the new albums. I’ll start with the 27th September release day, which was pretty amazing. Albums from John Calvin Abney, Will Johnson, Dori Freeman, Michaela Anne, Billy Strings, Red River Dialect, Sturgill Simpson, Field Guides, Coyote Brother, Sofia Talvik, Tiny Ruins (solo versions of Olympic Girls), Jack Klatt, Cataldo, The Orphan Brigade, Gratiot Lake Road, M Horton Smith, Charlie Parr and a very special EP from Black Sea Dahu.

If we look further back the previous two release fridays, this playlist features a song from the albums by Sidney Lindner & The Silver Wilderness Collective, Hiss Golden Messenger, Paper Beat Scissors, Brittany Howard, Vincent Neil Emerson, Charley Crockett, Bror Gunnar Jansson, Darrin Bradbury, Anna Ash, The Lonesome Billies, Lauren Pratt, Neal Francis, Pieta Brown, Jeremy Ivey, Kate Teague and Andrew Combs. Plus a song from the EPs by JP Harris and William Alexander.

This one has a lot of great Finnish material too. There’s a song from the long-waited Iron Country Sisters debut in the beginning and later on a Finnish language section that features a song from the wonderful new albums by Viitasen Piia and Litku Klemetti and the new singles from Knipi, J.Matkala and STINAKO. Plus a Finnish indie classic Purkkaa by Tolbiac, because he just put out a compilation called Sketches (2001-2004).

Not as many international singles as normally, because this is already so long that I’ll need to buy a beer for anyone who has the time to listen to the whole thing until the very end. But some very special still like the new ones from Matt Dorrien, Logan Ledger, Hallelujah the Hills, Vetiver, Daniel Martin Moore, Simon Joyner..

Another week, another weekly playlist

Big thank you to everyone who either submitted or will submit a video to the anniversary festival. The official submission window is now closed, but of course all those that I’ve had direct contact with can and hopefully will submit before the event starts. If someone who would really love to be a part of this just sees this now, ask me and I might have time to include a few more. But no full surprise entries anymore, because in that case I might run out of time.

Some big album releases again this week. I spent the Saturday at Yola / Iron Country Sisters concert in Helsinki, so I haven’t done a whole lot of listening yet, but Joan Shelley, Jesse Malin, Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster, Garrett T. Capps, Humbird and Aaron Lee Tasjan are some of my own favorites. Other new albums on the list are from Whitney, Parsnip, Boy Scouts and Black Belt Eagle Scout. Lasers Lasers Birmingham album is a month old, but I just got into this one and I’m enjoying it a lot. Kele Goodwin album is even a year or two old, but it just got a new vinyl release on Oscarson, so it felt like a good time to include a song from it. I found it many months after the release back then, so I don’t think I ever featured this beauty here. Some great new EPs too this week. Lagniappe Sessions from Erin Rae and William Tylerplus a new one from Molly Taylor (thanks to Jodi James for bringing her music to my attention).

This week’s Finnish entries are an album cut from the new Samae Koskinen record and the brand new singles from Iron Country Sisters, Viitasen Piia, MeriTuuli, Litku Klemetti and Rock Siltanen (forgot this one a week ago, I’m ashamed).

The big release news of the week is that there’s a new Vetiver album on the horizon. Excellent first single is now out on Mama Bird Recording Co / Loose Music. Some other favorite singles came from Will Johnson, Ags Connolly, Caleb Caudle (cover of Hank Williams classic), Durand Jones & The Indications and Red River Dialect. Everything else would also be worth mentioning, but you’ll find them all from the list below.

That’s it for this week. I’ll start preparing the online festival, so the other blog stuff might suffer a bit. Day job and that will take most of time and sometimes it seems like sleeping is a pretty decent option too. I’ll try to squeeze in some other posts too, but there won’t be many. But there’s definitely something I should do. For example that Jason Hawk Harris album is so awesome that it deserves a whole lot of love. I don’t have clue will there be a new playlist next week, it depends how quickly I work on the festival thingy. Next weekend is pretty much dedicated to the festival and I’m trying to get everything drafted during that weekend. So that on the last week all I would have left would be to add the last few submissions that arrive close to the start.

Another week, another weekly playlist

Had to switch back to the weekly, because there was just so much new albums this week. Somewhat easier to handle this on a weekly basis. I suppose one way forward would be to keep this weekly, but at the end of the month quickly compile some kind of favorites of the month list that doesn’t vanish. So there would be an option also for those who don’t need or want an insanely long playlist of new songs every freakin’ week (yeah, I know. Nobody really needs a list long as this every week). Submissions still open for the festival too, so if you are interested, shoot a live video of one song (can be just a quickly done phone video made at home, rehearsal place) and send it to me. But on to the new albums and oh my there were lots of them this week. Jason Hawk Harris, Leslie Stevens and Esther Rose are ones that I’ve been waiting eagerly for months and they are just as good as I had hoped. That’s just a tiny fraction of the action and there were new albums from Sunny War, Tanya Tucker, Dalton Domino, Queen of Jeans, The Po’ Rambling Boys, Croy and the Boys, The 40 Acre Mule, Ottoman Turks, Redd Kross, Bryan Estepa, The Rubinoos, Shannon Lay, Rose Dorn, Rachel Sermanni, Becky Ninkovic, Jay Som, Ward Hayden & The Outliers, Carriers, David Wax Museum and Tom Brosseau. That took a while to write, let alone listen. And still some say that there’s no good new music available. Oh and on the EP front there’s Erin Enderlin new EP. It’s already chapter three, but somehow I’ve managed to miss the first two. Sorry about that.

This week’s Finnish section contains singles from Kielo Kärkkäinen, Anne-Mari Kivimäki & Palomylly, Pink Chameleons and Grant Wood Company plus the new album from Jukka Nissinen. Oh and if you have chance to see a Anne-Mari Kivimäki & Palomylly concert do not think twice, just go. You will love every second. I sure did when they played at Ilmiö festival a month ago.

There’s also plenty of those international singles. Too much to namedrop all of them, but some personal favorites came from Jamie Lin Wilson, Joan Shelley, Darrin Bradbury, VanWyck, Itasca, Courtney Marie Andrews (from forthcoming Tom Waits tribute album), Sturgill Simpson, Anna Ash and Isobel Campbell. But hey these all rule and I could just as well list them all.
