OCTA Weekly Playlist Episode #22

Hey another week, another weekly playlist.

This was delayed until Monday, because I was working on the aoty list all weekend long. I still wanted to do this as well, because some lovely artists didn’t care about this silly year-end routine and released fantastic music so late in the year that one couldn’t include them. Except that I haven’t posted my songs of the year list yet, so you didn’t get away that easily. Looking at you Cale Tyson, Leah Senior and M.Lockwoord Porter. Nothing wrong with this new one either. There were also a great new album from Finnish band Too Slow and an EP from Itä-Hollola installaatio. The list also has a song from the new Micah Schnabel EP. It’s been out a week or two, but didn’t know it was on Spotify.

I think my favorite new song of the week is the new single by Cale Tyson. A moving look at a relationship that has become unhealthy. Bonus points for being able to use the word “instagram” on a song. Apparently anything can work if you are a good songwriter. The already mentioned Leah Senior and M.Lockwood Porter singles are also pure gold.

The latter half are full of Christmas songs. So if you hate them passionately, you can stop listening after Scott Hirsch. I still think these are rather good ones though. My favorites are the Andrew Bryant ones. I had to include his seasonal song from 2017, because I happen to love the song I Wish I Had More. Plus I have to fully use the chance to finally feature his music on these playlists, because his 2018 album is not on Finnish Spotify. (Erin Rae’s cover song is also from last year). His new is also excellent. Socks by JD McPherson is the one I would go with, if I bought Christmas record. I’m sure I missed a lot of new ones from this yuletune category, because I don’t follow it that closely. I probably missed a lot in general too this week, because this was a bit more rushed effort than normally and I didn’t go through the Bandcamp, CD Baby etc release calendar to find some hidden gems etc.

I think this will be the last weekly playlist before Christmas. I don’t expect a lot of new releases this week and even if there are, I think I deserve a Christmas break from this. However, there will be one more post before Christmas. The songs of the year 2018. I think this will be mostly a mega playlist with hours of my favourite songs of 2018 for the onechord history books. There won’t be a whole of writing, but I do try pick a top three, ten, twenty or something and the rest hundred or two will be in random order.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

OCTA Weekly Playlist Episode #21

Another week, another weekly playlist.

My main focus right now is writing the year-end lists, so I didn’t spend as much time to this as usual. Therefore I might have missed even more stuff than usually. I wanted to do it anyway, because some gorgeous albums and singles did come out this week too.

The big album releases for me were the new ones from Scott Hirsch, Willard Grant Conspiracy and Herman Dune. There were lots of magnificent singles too. Steve Gunn, Sloan, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Blank Range, Christopher Gold & The New Old Things, Susto and The Wild Reeds for the international charts and Hullu Ruusu, Message Field and Klasu for the Finnish one. Willy Tea Taylor also dropped a new EP with The River Arkansas.

There’s also a couple of great things I’ve managed to miss before. The new singles from Jenah Barry and Mo Troper. I’m especially ashamed that I forgot to put the Mo Troper song on last week’s list. I had been following the whole funny Bond theme song build up for weeks and then I forgot to put the song on the list when it came out. Shame on me.

Some releases/artists from previous weeks also appear with a different song. Next week maybe some sort of Christmas special, if there isn’t much new releases.

OCTA Weekly Playlist #20

Another week, Another weekly playlist.

This one was a slightly busier release week. Especially Canada provided a lot of great music this week. I was thrilled about the new albums from Daniel Romano, Foxwarren (Andy Shauf’s new project), the new single from Ian Daniel Kehoe (who formerly operated under the Marine Dreams moniker) and Julie Arsenault’s new EP (this one is not available on Spotify, but listen/it on her bandcamp, it’s wonderful).

Other big album releases were from Jeff Tweedy and Monteagle. I don’t really know anything about Michelle Petrie, but I liked her new album when I quickly listened to it last night and therefore that’s on the list too. I need to listen to it more properly when I have the time.

Lots of magnificent singles too. Tiny Ruins, Durand Jones & The Indications, Roseanne Reid, Molly Parden, Ally Kerr, Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Michael Chapman, Harlem, Taylor Janzen, Phoebe Bridgers, Hayes Carll etc. 2019 is already looking rather great, but I suppose I need to wrap up this 2018 next. I think I’ll start focusing on that next weekend.

Some songs have again been out a while, because either I just found them or just haven’t shared them before. A couple of Christmas tunes too, but I didn’t want to add them too much so early in December.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #19

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Not a whole lot of new releases. Therefore I added some stuff that came out earlier in the year too that I haven’t featured either at all or just not enough. I think the only albums on the list that actually came out this week are from americana songwriter Stephen Kellogg and the Finnish alternative rock band (or is it more of a solo thing) Joonas Holmen + The Lossy Codecs. If you love Penniless for example (and well who doesn’t), give a spin to that Joonas Holmen album, because it’s very good. Us Presidents album and Blue Wilson EP came out earlier in November, but they are the new finds of the week for me and I really like them both after a couple of listening sessions. The album that I listened to the most by far was the new Grand Salvo album that came out a week ago. An album of the year contender.

There were some great new singles. Bob Sumner from the Sumner Brothers will release a solo album in January and the first single Riverbed came out on Friday. Daniel Romano’s new album is out next week, but first there’s new single available. Fabulous Finnish artists Litku Klemetti and Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki also dropped new singles this week. Daniel Steinbock, Gold Rose and Nathan Truax singles are also brand new if I’m not mistaken. The other stuff on the list is slightly older, but definitely worth investigating. If your blogger was any good at his job (or well hobby), he would have praised Tomberlin, Sara Renberg, RF Shannon etc when their gorgeous albums came out.
