Another week, another weekly playlist

This one was a slightly slower release week. Maybe the industry believes everyone is celebrating either SXSW or CXCW during this week of the year. The solo album from Rob Snarski (The Blackeyed Susans) was on the top of my list for new albums, but that’s not yet available on this silly Spotify thing-y. Other great new albums from the week came from Todd Snider, Girl K, Stephen Malkmus, Tiger Saw and Renee Wahl. Iain Micah Weigert’s americana album and Bunny Boy’s new one (this reminds me of Sparklehorse) are a few weeks old, but weren’t available on Spotify before so they appear this time around. Same goes with the new Daniel Markham EP. There are also excellent brand new EPs from Caroline Lazar and Kyle Daniel.

The song of the week is Halla by Amuri. I’ve listened it a few dozen times and I love it to bits. Baroque pop meets Kaseva, Leevi and iskelmä. Nothing can go wrong there. Other Finnish selections are the new singles from Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L and New Silver Girl and the album from Radio Supernova. Oh and one more last minute addition that I almost missed. Lone Deer Laredo, the collaboration between Paola Suhonen and Olli Happonen (New Silver Girl) released their debut album last week.

While there wasn’t a whole lot of album action, the singles game was again really strong. There were new singles from the forthcoming albums by Anna Tivel, Daniel Norgren, Pony Bradshaw, M.Lockwood Porter, Brad Armstrong. A new single from Shane Leonard was a really pleasant surprise, because I love his work both as a songwriter and producer (he produced the Anna Tivel and Clara Baker albums that are on this list too). And like usual, every song could just as well be namedropped on this text too. These songs are here, because I really like all of them.

Because this was a slightly slower release week, I also revisited several big favorite from the last week or two.

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Maybe not the coolest thing to post a Spotify playlist after that bullshit appeal action they did earlier in the week. Makes that note at the bottom of this weekly playlist even more important. Support the artists that matter to you and buy their records. Still it’s not the customers’ fault that the current streaming royalty payout model is fucked up. The big music addicts like yours truly will always keep on buying records, but I think we’ve reached a point where we can’t convince the masses to buy physical records anymore. So paying a monthly fee is definitely a positive contribution to the world of music. We just need to put pressure on the tech companies and music business to spread that money in a more fairly manner. I hope someday they go with the user-centric model instead of the current pro-rata model. I’m a simple guy, so I feel like if I listen to only The Weather Station during a month, she should get everything from my monthly fee after Spotify’s own cut. I would be happy to pay a bigger monthly fee, if the money would go to the artist that I actually listen to instead of the major label acts. Hopefully there will be a some kind of resolution to the problem soon. It might not be easy, but I’m sure it’s possible for both the tech companies and the songwriters to thrive in the streaming world.

Anyway, on with the weekly playlist. Lots of great albums again. Norwegian I Was A King released their wonderful pop album Slow Century (produced by Norman Blake) and Clara Baker her folk treasure Things To Burn. I don’t usually include the reissues and compilations on this playlist, but surely I have to make an exception with the previously unreleased Townes Van Zandt recordings. There’s also a song from the great new albums by The Wild Reeds, Rosie Tucker, Caleb Elliot, The Boys With the Perpetual Nervousness, Howe Gelb, Joybird, Ryan Tanner, Rachel Toups, Nick Waterhouse, Stella Donnelly, Helado Negro and Danny Schmidt. My big favourites from a week ago, Katie Spencer and The Fire Harvest are here with another song, because I love these albums.

The lone Finnish entry this week is the gorgeous new single from Antti Autio. I’m sure there had to be more, so sorry if I missed something important.

On the international charts, we got the debut singles from Logan Ledger who is a name to keep an ear on. There’s two of them, so check out the other one too. There were also parade-worthy new singles from Christian Lee Hutson, Bart, Jacob Miller, Bedouine, Roseanne Reid and Caroline Spence. Again I could just as well namedrop them all, because I really like all of these songs and again had to drop some out because I didn’t want to expand this further than 40 songs. This includes the big ones like The Black Keys and The National, because I’m sure you’ve heard them elsewhere and I’m sure they are not too upset that they didn’t get on onechord.net’s weekly playlist haha. Another week, another weekly playlist.

Here I am again with the new songs that matter to me. Such a strong week of new singles and albums. I had over 50 songs to begin with and then brutally cut it down to 40. This time I wasn’t able to revisit any of the albums from a week ago. Maybe I return them later, if there are less busy weeks. There probably aren’t until summer though.

The new albums from Durand Jones & Indications, Robert Forster and Hand Habits were the ones that I expected the most and I really like all of them. The albums from UK folk songwriter Katie Spencer and Netherlands-based band The Fire Harvest are maybe the most interesting ones for me at the moment, because there’s nothing like finding new artists to love. I’ve been really addicted to The Fire Harvest song Spring. It reminds me of Songs:Ohia. The song of the week for me together with new Damien Jurado song. It’s been just a few days so I’ve only listened to a little bit of the other intriguing album releases of the week. There are lots of them and the list includes a song from a new album by Mary Bragg, KiDD, Dee White, Lomelda, The Honey Dewdrops, Andrew Leahey & The Homestead, Steve Poltz, The Limboos, Quaker City Night Hawks, The Cactus Blossoms and Lonesome Shack. The BA Johnston album is a week or two old, but I missed it then and as a sport freak I have to include a song that’s called Our Love is Like the Cleveland Browns. On the EP front, there’s new ones from Wild Pink and Della Mae.

The Finnish part isn’t big, but quality over quantity. The playlist contains a song from the gorgeous new albums by Lanai and Jani Matti Juhani and the new singles from The Lieblings and Swan/Koistinen.

Next up is the new singles. There was a new outtake from the forthcoming Damien Jurado album and it’s obviously brilliant. The big news of the week was that Ian Noe’s debut album is on the horizon. The first single Irene (Ravin’ Bomb) is a song that already appeared on his great EP, but hey this song demands a new spin. I can’t wait to hear the album. Some big ones were the new singles from Hiss Golden Messenger, Anna Burch, Big Thief, Rosie Tucker, She Keeps Bees, Todd Snider and Brad Armstrong. I missed the Carl Schilde single and the second single from the forthcoming Charlotte Cornfield album a week ago, so I made amends and included them this time around. As usual, I could just as well namedrop all of these in this text. These are all on the playlist, because I really like them. And like I said, this time this could have easily been at least 50 songs long. I left out some excellent higher profile singles (Kevin Morby, Sebadoh etc), some albums that are objectively amazing but maybe not exactly my cup of tea (Yves Jarvis etc), some awesome covers (Rue Snider etc) and so forth. If you actually listen to this, feel free to drop hints how long this should be each week. Oh and all things are not available on Finnish Spotify (Motherhood, Bunny Boy etc). But that’s enough of pointless rambling. Here’s the playlist of the week.
