Swearin’, Bad Moves, Alien Boy and Screaming Females

Again one of these round-ups while I try to feature most of the music that matters to me before focusing on the pointless year-end lists in mid-December. This time just a quick video post and surprisingly it isn’t the same old country/folk stuff. I hit the 40 year mark yesterday, so maybe I desperately try to convince myself that I’m not too old to rock. Just kidding of course. I might be old, but I’ll never be too old to rock and I love this kind of stuff too.

Kicking off with a song from the new excellent Swearin’ album Fall Into The Sun that came out on Merge Records on the 5th of October. I could basicly pick any song for this, but let’s go with the awesome album closer Future Hell.

Next up is some upbeat power pop from Washington D.C. The new Bad Moves album Tell No One hit the stores and our hearts on the 21st of September via Don Giovanni Records. It’s super catchy and especially Spirit FM and Cool Generator should be hits. Everything else works too. A damn good album.

Moving on to Portland, Oregon and to the new Alien Boy album Sleeping Lessons. The album was released by Tiny Engines on the 31st of August. 600 Days is probably my favorite song, but this album opener Somewhere Without Me is also a winner. Bonus points for the Oasis shirt and Stone Roses reference.

Last stop for tonight is New Brunswick, New Jersey and the latest Screaming Females album All At Once. I had missed this when it came out on Don Giovanni Records on the 23rd of February and actually just found it today thanks to Laura Jane Grace who shared her favorite albums of 2018 with Brooklyn Vegan. So thanks Laura for bringing this to my attention. I’ve just a spent a couple of hours with it, but I’m already loving it. This is I’ll Make You Sorry from the album.

Grand Salvo, Frontperson & VanWyck

We don’t celebrate thanksgiving in Finland, but lately I’ve been grateful of having the chance to live side by side with the new brilliant Grand Salvo album Sea Glass. Australian Paddy Mann has again written and composed something remarkable. This is exceptional art built around a single vivid memory that is presented to the listener on the second to last song Field of Flowers. A gentle male voice singing softly in an almost repetitive loop, often accompanied with a heavenly beautiful choir and instruments that I couldn’t name without the press release (qanun, kora, koto etc). It’s a wondrous stream of magical music that flows through me creating its own strong and compelling memory that I will carry with me wherever I roam. This and the new Laura Gibson album are the current contenders for the album of the year title. Not that music is a competition. I love both madly. Here’s the memory Field of Flowers and a live version of an album track In The Water. Still probably the best way to introduce your heart to this music is to to just listen to the whole album from the beginning. Sea Glass is now out on Mistletone.

I love Woodpigeon and therefore I’m thrilled that the man behind the moniker, Mark Andrew Hamilton, has released a new fabulous album together with Kathryn Calder (The New Pornographers). Their band is called Frontperson and the album Frontrunner came out on the 21st of September on Oscar St. Records. Beforehand I was more familiar with the work of Mark Andrew Hamilton, but I’m equally mesmerized with the songs of Kathryn Calder. Frontperson is a gorgeous collaboration of two great Canadian songwriters. Here’s a couple of personal favorites from the album.

One more for this quick round-up post. Ballad Of The Quiet Citizen is a song by a Dutch songwriter VanWyck written for What the World needs Now platform. It’s a powerful protest song against a culture of fear and hate. A welcome reminder that love speaks louder still. Also remember to check out her 2018 album An Average Woman.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #19

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Not a whole lot of new releases. Therefore I added some stuff that came out earlier in the year too that I haven’t featured either at all or just not enough. I think the only albums on the list that actually came out this week are from americana songwriter Stephen Kellogg and the Finnish alternative rock band (or is it more of a solo thing) Joonas Holmen + The Lossy Codecs. If you love Penniless for example (and well who doesn’t), give a spin to that Joonas Holmen album, because it’s very good. Us Presidents album and Blue Wilson EP came out earlier in November, but they are the new finds of the week for me and I really like them both after a couple of listening sessions. The album that I listened to the most by far was the new Grand Salvo album that came out a week ago. An album of the year contender.

There were some great new singles. Bob Sumner from the Sumner Brothers will release a solo album in January and the first single Riverbed came out on Friday. Daniel Romano’s new album is out next week, but first there’s new single available. Fabulous Finnish artists Litku Klemetti and Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki also dropped new singles this week. Daniel Steinbock, Gold Rose and Nathan Truax singles are also brand new if I’m not mistaken. The other stuff on the list is slightly older, but definitely worth investigating. If your blogger was any good at his job (or well hobby), he would have praised Tomberlin, Sara Renberg, RF Shannon etc when their gorgeous albums came out.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you.

Robert Ellis, Vanessa Peters, Matthew McNeal & Jerry David DeCicca

Carrying on with the desperate attempt to share all the 2018 releases that matter to me. Tonight I’ll have a sort of a Texas video special for your viewing pleasure.

Kicking off from Houston with my favorite song of the past week. Robert Ellis will have a new album Texas Piano Man coming out on Valentine’s Day 2019 via New West Records. The first single Fucking Crazy is like a perfect love song for these insane times. I’m so looking forward to the album and can’t wait to hear what else this wonderful man has crafted for us.

Next stop Dallas and the new Vanessa Peters album Foxhole Prayers that came out on the 5th of October on Idol Records. It has been a big favorite of mine during the last few months. I’ve already written a few times about it and have also shared this particular song Carnival Barker that is based Warren G. Harding’s presidency and how dangerously the history is repeating itself right now. However, I don’t think I’ve shared the great music video of this powerful song and therefore a revisit is a must.

A small step to the west on the map to find Fort Worth and songwriter Matthew McNeal. He has been quite busy in 2018 and has released a full-length album Good Luck in February and two singles Change and All For Nothing during the autumn. The music is a sweet combination of americana, rock’n’roll and soul. Kinda surprisingly I’ve especially loved the ones with laid-back soulful vibes like the last two singles. If you follow the weekly playlist, you’ve heard those already so let’s go with a lyric video of my favorite song from the album. This is Run from the album Good Luck that is out and available on Matte Black Sound Company.

Heading down south to Bulverde, TX to meet up with Jerry David DeCicca. He has been been even more prolific than McNeal and has released two full-lenght albums during the year. The laid-back and mellow Time The Teacher came out in February on Impossible Ark Records. A really lovely jazzy album that might cause a sudden hunger for watermelons. The latest Jerry David DeCicca album Burning Daylight is a different affair, but still equally great. It was recorded live to tape and it’s a great rock record inspired by his songwriting heroes like Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Warren Zevon, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Burning Daylight is now out and availabe on Super Secret Records and this is the video for the title track.

Oh well, have to drop another one too, because it’s so good.
