Video of the Day #157: The Inbreds

Inbreds_kombinator

We are really up-to-date here at the onechord.net headquarters. This video of the day is about 20 years old and I just found it during boxing day 2014. Anyway, I thought I have to post it on the blog as well, because Any Sense Of Time by The Inbreds has been one of my favourite songs during the past couple of months. I don’t really understand why I never found them in the late 90s. Totally my kind of stuff and they were even on Tag Recordings along with my (all-time) favourites Fountains Of Wayne and The Lemonheads. Better late than never I suppose. The reason why I found them now was Mike O’Neill’s solo stuff. I really loved Mike’s Wild Lines album and had been listening to it for a year and when the Zunior’s boxing day sale arrived again, I thought I will pick up his back catalogue. So first I picked the solo records and then wanted to get a couple of The Inbreds albums as well, because he was one half of The Inbreds (the other being Dave Ullrich who actually runs Zunior). And now both The Inbreds and Mike O’Neill are constantly playing on my iPod while I bag potatoes at the factory. I don’t know how well people know Mike O’Neill in Canada, but he should famous. And I should write a long post about The Inbreds and that Mike O’Neill solo stuff, because it’s all great and the man is a pop genius. I just don’t have time for that now so I post just post this wonderful song Any Sense Of Time by The Inbreds (from their album Kombinator 1994).

Daniel Romano Finland Tour in June!

danielromanonew

There aren’t much bigger music news than this, if you use One Chord To Another scale. Canadian Daniel Romano will play four shows in Finland in June 2015. I’ve been a huge fan since his 2011 album Sleep Beneath the Willow and seeing him live is like a dream come true. A huge thank you to Gaea Booking and 8raita for making this happen (and whoever is responsible for the Mariehamn date, the man/woman who runs that Dino’s Bar there has a great taste. They’ve had some great artists there over the years. Some that haven’t even found their way to the mainland, Lydia Loveless and Scott H. Biram at least were there. because I remember being upset at not being able to see them myself).

A lot more about this when the time is right, but here are the Finnish dates of his Euro tour:

Daniel Romano & The Trilliums In Finland!:

2015.06.03 Mariehamn (FIN) @ Dino Bar
2015.06.04 Tampere (FIN) @ Herwood Stage & Bar
2015.06.05 Turku (FIN) @ Klubi
2015.06.06 Helsinki (FIN) @ Korjaamo

Lilly Hiatt – Royal Blue, Tom Brosseau – Perfect Abandon

lillyhiatti

Just a quick note about two really good albums that was just released. First we have Lilly Hiatt’s new album Royal Blue that was released by Normaltown Records. I don’t know that much about Lilly. I just started listening to her music a couple of days ago and therefore I’m only in the process of matching my heart with her music. To be honest, I don’t know that much about her father John Hiatt either. I’m sure that’s a crime, but hey, at least you can’t argue that I only like Lilly because of her father. Perhaps this will actually go the other way around and I end up investigating that John Hiatt song catalogue after falling in love with Lilly’s music. This is Jesus Would’ve Let Me Pick The Restaurant from Royal Blue.

New Tom Brosseau album Perfect Abandon is also out and available. I don’t think I have written about this gorgeous folk singer-songwriter for years. Probably not since his 2006 album Empty Houses Are Lonely. I must admit that I even lost touch with him for several years and didn’t really continue listening until his excellent 2014 album Grass Punks. I should probably dig up everything that I lost between Empty Houses Are Lonely and Grass Punks, because these last two have both been excellent. This new one was produced by John Parish and Ali Chant. This is Roll Along With Me from Perfect Abandon.

Moor Hound – Missin’ Out & Hayden – Hey Love

moorhound

More brand new stuff. Moor Hound aka Steve Marino from Bloomington, Indiana, has been on my radar for a while, but hasn’t been featured on this page at all. Flannelgraph Records released the new Moor Hound single Missin’ Out b/w Married on the 24th of February. I really liked his Stifled Spirit album that had some really beautiful soft folk songs on it. This new one is perhaps a bit more pop-orientated, but sounds equally good to me. Here’s the a-side Missin’ Out.

Legendary Hayden is about to release a new album Hey Love later this month. I have really high hopes for this one. The previous one Us Alone is actually my favourite Hayden album. It was kind of a slow grower for me and I didn’t really appreciate enough when it came out. However, it’s still on my iPod and I still return to that amazing album on a weekly or monthly basis. Hey Love will be released by Arts & Crafts and will drop into our hearts on the 24th of March. I’m aware that you get to stream it, if you pre-order, but think I rather buy it from the local record store, because it’s worth it to support those. Here’s the wonderful title track Hey Love.
