OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #248

A busy weekend. Friday I drove to Pori to see Chad Price and Samae Koskinen. Tomorrow I plan to go to Helsinki to see David Ramirez and Iron Country Sisters. So it didn’t leave much time to listen new music, but I quickly put this thing together. There was again a lot of of releases and I didn’t have the time to listen full albums. I’ll do that during the coming week.

Tyler Childers is the big one of the week, but there’s plenty of great things on the rootsy side of the scale. Like new Nick Shoulders, Jobi Riccio, Allison Russell and Logan Ledger for example. Nico Hedley, Smug Brothers and Swansea Sound are highly recommended on the other end of the onechordnet spectrum. Then there’s also great new albums from Jonathan Wilson, Low Cut Connie, Lillie Mae, Drayton Farley (EP), Bill and the Belles (Willie Nelson covers), Idanha (EP), Sparklehorse (posthumous album from one of my all-time faves. I haven’t really listened to it yet. I think I need the perfect moment for that), Patrick Dethlefs and Pleasure Horse (covers).

From Finland my favorites are songs I’ve missed before. I found dream pop / shoegaze band Hattara this week (thanks to Joel) and love all the three singles they’ve released so far. This is why there’s a rare double feature, because I couldn’t decide which of them I will choose. So I picked up two. Even that was difficult. We also have a couple of gorgeous album releases from Rami Vierula and Markus Krunegård (still logging Markus among the Finnish ones, because he sings in Finnish on the new album. I hope he doesn’t mind). A couple of excellent new singles from Hulda Huima and Pambikallio too.

New Gladie song can take the imaginary international song of the week title. Love that band and this is again such great song. Other early song faves came from Kelly Hunt, Paige Plaisance, Thomas Walsh, Bry Webb, Jacksonport, Teenage Tom Petties, The Resonant Rogues, Gabriel Birnbaum and Van Plating. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Back next week with another one of these things. Love love love.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #247

A busy weekend. First wonderful I’m Kingfisher & Nightbird concerts and then a weekend trip to my hometown Keuruu. Therefore this is again a bit delayed new music weekly. But an important one, because it was a crazy good Finnish release week. Somewhat quieter in the US. Probably due to labor day weekend.

Let’s start with the Finnish ones, because my most waited album of 2023 is now out and available. It’s the mega power pop / rock’n’roll blast from Kristiina. Absolutely love it and kinda had to include a couple of (should-be) hits instead of just settling for one. So this starts with a song by Kristiina and then there’s another one among the other Finnish cuts. And oh my, there’s plenty of those other ones. Definitely not a good release week only because of Kristiina. That Tanssiva Karhu album is another big favorite and then there’s also really good new albums from Kari Tapiiri, Thomas Ignatius and Lyyti. Some mighty good singles too from Kuumat Siivet, Sepänkadun Köyhät ja Nöyryytetyt, Ahti Kulo, Rebekka Holi, Mara Balls and Emilia Tuovila ja Väijytys. And probably a bunch more that I didn’t have time to listen or wasn’t even aware of them.

My favorite international album of the week is the new Rae Fitzgerald. Such a beautiful and moving album. It really struck a chord with me when I listened it with headphones Saturday night. Other excellent new albums came from Maija Sofia, Indianna Hale, Jacob Aranda, Jacob Furr, The Satchel Kid, Chris Pierce, The Great Park, Tony Logue, The Natvral, The Photocopies, Darby Wilcox and the Peep Show (EP), Repulsive Woman (EP), Slowdive, Thorsten Nesch (EP) and Jesper Lindell (EP).

The international song of the week is either the perfect new pop song from Uni Boys or the return song from Jason Hawk Harris. Maybe they can share it, because they are rather different. Kind of best of both worlds that I listen. Other early favorites came from Lady Apple Tree, Espanola, Colored Lights, The David Tattersall Group and Lydia Loveless. Again just to name a few. Who can really tell which will become the biggest faves when I have more listen to them.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Next week is a bit of a question mark with this new music weekly. There’s some live music things I’d love to attend. I’m thinking about going to Lahti for the Sunday matinee concert of Chad Price and Samae Koskinen and after that travel to Helsinki for the David Ramirez concert. That might be doable although I would probably miss Iron Country Sisters and I would hate that. But I’m sure there will be other opportunies for that. Seeing the international artists Chad Price and David Ramirez would be the main thing this week. If I just do that, I would have time for the weekly. But I kinda would like to squeeze in the Kristiina concert on Friday in Helsinki or Chad and Samae somewhere else. Then I might not have time for the weekly. We’ll see. I’ll let you know on insta, x and/or blue sky (have a bs code or two btw if someone is looking). Love and kisses.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #246

Oh dear. What a release week. I almost threw in the towel. Way too much for one man to cover on one weekend. I’m sure I missed some just because I didn’t have enough time to listen everything. Let’s get started right away without pointless ramblings.

No clear cut album of the week, because I haven’t really listened full albums yet. Some big ones in the rootsy side of things. For example Turnpike Troubadours returned and Zach Bryan released a new one. A big personal fave Steve Sloane released a couple of new albums on Bandcamp a while ago. Now he put one of them on streaming. I started with a song from that, because I love that guy. Another a bit less-known personal favorite Joey O’Neil also released a new album. Then on the indie rock / power pop side of things we have a great new Ratboys album. Other new albums on this monster release week came from Hiss Golden Messenger, Buck Meek, Roselit Bone, Old Crow Medicine Show, Bob Lefevre and the Already Gone, Strawberry Runners, Ruth Garbus, Becca Mancari, Mipso, Ora Cogan, Nina de Vitry, Sonny & The Sunsets, Drew Beskin (EP), The Cowboys, Montana Book Club (EP), Kendra Morris, Tim Knol, Say She She, Rissi Palmer (EP) and The Two Tracks.

Big Finnish release week too led by the new Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L album. Listened it through today while walking around the city and loved every second of it. A special one for sure. There’s also most likely great new albums from Vasas flora och fauna and Emppu plus an EP from Too Slow. I’ll listen them properly during the coming days. Well I did spend some time with the Too Slow EP and thought it was gorgeous collection of slacker pop / power pop. My kinda stuff for sure. Oh yeah and then we have new singles from Maria Milvus, Babel, Knife Girl, Iisa, Amuri, Tuomo & Markus and Kaikki turhat haaveet.

The international singles are bit buried on the latter half of the playlist, because this week was so crowded with album releases and I always start with those. The single of the week is the new Jeffrey Martin song. It’s the first outtake from his next album that is coming out in November on Fluff & Gravy Records / Loose Music. So don’t submit your AOTY ballots until you’ve heard that one. Other early faves came from Evan Cheadle, Abby Hamilton, Steven Adams, Nico Hedley, Alli Sunshine, The Resonant Rogues, Rosali, Willy Tea Taylor & The Fellership, Jerry Leger, Evangeline Gentle and so forth. Just to name a few. I even had to leave a lot out, because this was getting longer than anyone will listen.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Back next week with another selection unless this gets overwhelming. Almost did this week. Phew. But I managed to put something together. Hope you enjoy it and maybe it even helps you divide the release calendar into something manageable. Love and other forms of gratitude.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #245

The release calendar is getting crowded as the summer is closing in. Way too much to cover by one man during one weekend. I’ve also been a bit sick. A really bad timing, because I missed BenBen’s concerts here in Turku. Anyway, here’s what I managed to find/listen.

Album of the week is the new Leah Senior. Anna Tivel is another big one, but obviously I already know these songs by heart. But oh how I love these new acoustic versions too. I don’t usually even include acoustic, live or extended versions of albums that I love, because there’s just so much completely new for me music to cover. But have to make an exception, because Anna Tivel is one of my favorite songwriters and these versions are absolutely beautiful. Other album gems this week came from Mapache, Diners, Margaret Glaspy, David Dondero, Brooks Forsyth, Babytooth, Kym Register + Meltdown Rodeo, Leponds, Jill Andrews, Nathan Mongol Wells, Woody Woodworth & Piners, Alta Vista, Stephen Steinbrink, Dana Gehrman, Pale Jay and Montana Book Club.

A couple of great Finnish albums from Vulvarutto and Rock Siltanen Group. Quite different, but I love em both. There’s also a whole lot of singles. There’s new ones from Tanssiva Karhu, Lätsä, Pekko Käppi, Bobby Oroza, Aavikko, Juppe, Sina Viola, Favourite Colours, Saarisalo, Inginmaa/Hypnomen and Mr. Dad. That Lätsä song is probably my own favorite. That hits the core of my heart.

The international single of the week has to be the new Bobby Emmett tune. A most welcome (surprise) return. His Learning Love album was the AOTY on this little blog back in 2009. A real power pop classic if you ask me. The new song rules too. Hopefully there’s more to come. Other early faves came from Bonnie Montgomery, Duff Thompson, Indianna Hale, Dan Edmonds, Katsy Pline, Sufjan Stevens, Rinehearts, Sun June and Jacksonport. Just to name few as usual. Who really knows at this point which will become the long term favorites.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Back next week with another one of these way too long playlist. Love and other stories.
