OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #202

Another week, another new music weekly.

This new music weekly is back on Apple Music for the next two months. So if you’ve been missing it, there’s some good news for you. Unfortunately it will only be temporary and most likely disappears again in mid-November, because I can’t afford to pay subscription fees to multiple streaming services. I rather give that money to the local record store. So it will be two month run unless it becomes immensely popular over there. And based on last run I know it won’t. So listen while you can and tell your Apple Music friends. One day I would also like to give Qobuz a go. Just to test drive the app and see whether it’s better, as good/bad or worse than other services.

The album of the week is the new beautiful monster from Daniel Romano’s Outfit. Pretty much unplaylistable (is that a word), because it’s just one song in two parts. Therefore I used to earlier single excerpt on the playlist. New albums from Charley Crockett, Scott Ballew and JPW were also on top of my list for this week. Then there’s also excellent new ones from Rachel Angel, Thorsten Nesch (EP), Snow Coats, Jason McCue, The Boys With Perpetual Nervousness, Mike Adams at His Honest Weight, Marlon Williams, Futurebirds & Carl Broemel, Air Waves, Jake La Botz, GA-20, Laura Benitez and the Heartache, Damn Tall Buildings, The Deer, lund and Mayya.

The Finnish section is tiny, but the quality is high. The debut single from Heta Narkaus is the highlight along with the second single from The Skiffs. And yeah I do have a soft spot for Olavi Uusivirta and his new album is again really good. Plus I also added one more song from the ITE EEROLA album.

My favorite song of the week has been the new awesome Melissa Carper single. You better not finish your AOTY lists in early November, because the album is due out on the 18th of November. I’m already reserving a spot for Ramblin’ Soul on my list. I’m also a big fan of Terry’s Paradise and their new single. New EP on the horizon there. Other early single favorites came from Courtney Marie Andrews, 2nd Grade, I Was a King, Tedo Stone, Tommy Prine (beautiful debut single from John Prine’s son), Caleb Caudle, Hallelujah the Hills, Isla Craig and Terra Spencer & Ben Caplan. Again just to name a few and future spins will dictate what will become the biggest personal faves.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. By the time of the next new music weekly, this blog will be 21 years old. Kinda crazy if you ask me. Yet here I still am and I guess will be for the foreseeable future. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #201

Another week, another new music weekly.

Hey look, it’s episode #201. I guess there was never that big of a doubt. Although mid-week I did consider taking a break for a week or two, because it felt like I’ve given all I have for the time being. But then on Friday I saw all kind of cool things like the new Kristiina single and suddenly it felt like there was a reason to keep going. So here we are.

This was a horrible week in the country music world, because we lost a great songwriter and a beautiful soul way too young. Rest in peace Luke Bell and thank you for everything. Luke actually duets with Martha Spencer on a couple of songs on Martha’s brand new album, so I’ll start this week with Martha and Luke singing beautifully together. I would have loved to share that under better circumstances, because the album is a beauty and worth all the love. Another rootsy gem in the beginning is Jack Fister’s album followed with a few power pop treasures from Uni Boys and Mo Troper. Kind of covering both sides of my music listening habits there. The week also gave us new albums from Jake Tittle, Ragland, The Wynntown Marshalls, Jay Gavin (EP) Drayton Farley (EP), Lean Year, Lou Turner, Motel Radio, The Orchids, Ylayali, Ruby Gill, Brittany Collins and Julie Title (this last one is from mid-August).

The Finnish section starts with my favorite song of the week. It’s the first single from Kristiina’s (Tamara Luonto) forthcoming album. Absolutely love this one, which is not surprise because Neiti B by Tamara Luonto is one of my favorite Finnish songs of the year. Can’t wait to hear more from both Kristiina and Tamara Luonto. A couple of big album releases too from Samae Koskinen and Itä-Hollola Installaatio plus singles from KIUSA, Otto Mikkola, AURAL, Evita, Bleak Moments, Knife Girl and Tahtoisin kertoa sinulle tarinan. All great, but I want to highlight the one by KIUSA, because the band hasn’t been on this blog before. Just found them this weekend (thanks Olli) and I really like them. The list also includes two more songs from Ite Eerola’s last week album release, because I still love it madly.

And then the international singles. There’s the double a-side split power pop monster single in the beginning from Weird Nightmare and Ancient Shapes. Later on some of my favorites include the new ones from Todd Farrell Jr, Marina Allen, Mapache, Drew Beskin & The Sunshine, Nathan K, The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness and The Late Great. Just to name a few and only further spins will tell me what I end up loving the most.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #200

Another week, another new music weekly.

It’s also new music weekly #200. Hooray! Kinda crazy that I’ve spent 200 weekends almost in a row making this little thing. I’ve missed a few due to various reasons, but it has still been a big task. Sometimes even a hell of a grind due to the hours it takes to compile it. I have no idea whether it was worth it or if it matters. Probably not in any kind of bigger scale, but it matters to me and hopefully to some of you. I’m grateful for everyone who have listened the playlist and/or read this accompanied blog post regularly or occasionally. There are many bigger publications out there doing similar things, so it means a lot that you follow my one man adventure in the world of new music. I hope I’ve rewarded that trust with giving you some hidden gems that you may have otherwise missed.

I’ll start this time with the Finnish ones, because there’s a new Finnish album that I love madly. Ite Eerola actually may have written my favorite album of the year so far. I have nothing but love for this beautiful album. Oh and don’t be scared of the title, because the overall feel of this is warm-hearted, comforting and humane. It may often revolve around death, but it makes me love life, people close to me and myself. And well especially that myself part hasn’t always been a given. So thank you Reetta for that and this treasure of an album. I even made an exception and put two songs from it to the playlist. That may be the first time ever. But moving on now, because there’s more Finnish gems too. We also got an excellent album from Tulio and some mighty singles from Kuumat Siivet, Kytäjä and Sammal. Oh and then there’s also a revisit to last week’s wonderful Mikael H and Rock Siltanen Group albums.

The international album part doesn’t have many long time favorites, but that’s also refreshing because it gives me more time to listen to artists that are fairly new to me. Kyle Hamlett Duo and The Secret Beach for example fall into this category and both made awesome albums. Let’s Whisper is a great one if you are into indie pop and for soul fans that Thee Sacred Souls album is exciting. Julia Jacklin of course rules and I loved that Paisley Fields track but didn’t have time to listen the whole album yet. And then there’s many others that I look forward to listen more thoroughly. The week gave us new albums from Lilly Winwood, Stella Donnelly, Miles Hewitt, Will Hoge, Chris Forsyth, Valerie June (covers), L.A. Mood, Thanya Iyer (EP), Terminally Phil (EP), Tommy McLain, Jacob Faurholt, Marcus King and Nora Brown.

And finally the international singles. First let’s take moment to celebrate that there’s new music from Caitlin Rose. First single is out now and it’s a great one. I also loved that Tommy Alexander joined Fluff & Gravy Records family and released a new single. Some other favorites came from Johanna Samuels, Adeline Hotel, Nikki Lane, M. Lockwood Porter, Jeremy Squires, Ellen Froese, Rinehearts (thanks to Joe Algeri for the recommendation), Stephen Becker, The Speedways, Small Sur, JPW and Chris Canterbury. Again just to name a few. I have no idea yet what will become my biggest favorites until I have more time to listen to these.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. I still don’t have a clear picture of the future and will things stay completely the same now that I’ve reached this milestone. I guess so, but only 100% sure thing is that this won’t completely disappear. So come back next week to see if things look the same. Until then. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #199

Another week, another new music weekly.

What a strong release week. It seems like the music world came back from summer vacation. I had to leave out some good singles, because the length of this was getting completely out of hand.

Album of the week is the new Anna Tivel album Outsiders. She is one of my favorite songwriters right now and this new album is again wonderful. I also want to highlight the new Little Mazarn album Texas River Song. There’s so much more though and the week gave us great albums from Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears, The Medium, Emily Fairlight / The Shifting Sands, Andrew Combs, Tiffany Williams, Cass McCombs, Early James, Cassandra Lewis, Ever More Nest, Rock Eupora, Mt. Misery (EP), Why Bonnie, The Mountain Goats, Eli Winter, Bill Scorzari, Taylor Alexander, B.B. Palmer (EP), James Marples (EP), Cinema Hearts (EP) and Nick Frater. And that’s just what one man managed to find on one weekend.

The Finnish section is also one of the longest I’ve had on this new music weekly. The highlights for me are the albums from Mikael H and Rock Siltanen Group. Both fabulous in their own way. If I had to choose one as Finnish album of the week, I would probably go with Mikael H. Such a beautiful album and I fell for it on first listen. There were also great albums from Henna Emilia Hietamäki and Puiset Heilat plus an EP from Helmi Ada. Not forgetting some gorgeous singles from Vuoret, Joni Ekman, Litku Klemetti, Samae Koskinen, Tuomo Mannonen, Keidas, Lintudisko, Treemer and Tuomo & Markus.

And finally the international hits. These got a bit buried under the flood of gorgeous albums, but there’s plenty of beautiful ones. A couple of my favorite songwriters Twain and J.E. Sunde can share the imaginary song of the week honors. J.E. Sunde’s one is a collaboration with Pomplamoose, so credit also to Nataly Dawn for that beauty of a song. Some other big early faves came from Charley Crockett, Sloan, Allison Russell (feat Brandi Carlile), Greta Morgan, Lincoln Barr, Lee Fields, Thee Sacred Souls and Kyle Hamlett Duo. Again just to name few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. This was the episode #199, so next week we have a celebratory 200th episode. Will it also be the final one? Most likely not. Although, sometimes it does feel like this has run its course and it would be time to spend my weekends on something else. Unfortunately or fortunately letting go of it also feels difficult. Anyway, next week the 200th episode of this crazy new music project. See you then dear reader/listener.
