OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #205

Another week, another new music weekly.

The big one this week is the new Tyler Childers album. I didn’t start with it though, because I rather highlight some lesser known gems in the beginning of the playlist. I’ve been digging the new Shawn Hess album, so that’s my album of the week. John Fullbright also made a great return and I’ve been listening to that one quite a lot. On the other end of the onechord.net musical spectrum we have some gorgeous albums from Office Culture, Eli Pearl, Bill (EP) and Lee Baggett. I’m not sure is this genre-hopping a good thing, but that’s how it will always go here because I can’t paint myself into just one corner. Oh yeah and that 2nd Grade album is a mighty good one, if you want some great power pop. That’s not even all and the week also gave us new albums from Freya Josephine Hollick, Have Gun, Will Travel (EP), Shannen Moser, The Uplifting Bell Ends, Julia, Julia, The Barbaras, Mary Bragg, Matthew Check and Lambchop. There’s also Kayla Mahomed (EP) from the week before.

The Finnish highlight of the week is the new Treemer mini-LP. Other early favorites are the new singles from Litku Klemetti and Joose Keskitalo. This week we also got an EP from Tumma Paahto, album from Hiekka and singles from Ocelot, Raivo Jackson (TVZ cover), Särkyneet and Ville Miettinen. Oh yeah and at the end there’s also another song from the Knife Girl LP from the past week.

The international single of the week got the be the new Ron Sexsmith single. Also love that Erin Rae single. An outtake from the sessions of her 2022 album. Still one of my own favorites of the year. Rich Man is a strong song too and by no means just a throwaway that didn’t make the album cut. Oh yeah Melissa Carper and Tommy Alexander released more gold from their forthcoming albums. Love those songs a lot. Oh yeah and Pony Bradshaw, Dawn Riding, Caitlin Rose and M.Lockwood Porter songs are of course wonderful. Some pop gems too from the likes of Quivers, Dazy, Daniel Wylie, Martha and Ian M Bailey (this last one is a month old, but I missed it at the time). Shabason & Krgovich track is another early fave, but as usual I could namedrop all of the songs in this text.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #204

Another week, another new music weekly.

This week I made also some sort of genre-specific playlists based on these new music weekly posts. There’s one with power pop, soul and Finnish language songs and you’ll find them from my Spotify and Apple profiles. I can add to Tidal too, if there’s interest. I’m not really sure how I will operate those. This new music weekly remains the main thing, but maybe I’ll pick some songs from these to those bi-weekly or monthly or something. So everything will be here first. I thought about folk / country / americana thing too. Or women of folk or something like that. I do cover that pretty well here with this playlist so maybe somewhat unnecessary. Power pop and Finnish language stuff are dear to me but still gets a smaller role here and therefore made perhaps more sense to highlight them separately as well. We’ll see. Feel free to make a request, if there’s something specific you’d love to listen.

And on with the new music weekly. New solo Benjamin Tod is probably the album of the week here with Nikki Lane and Mr. Sam & The People People albums on its side. Other album treasures of the week came from Jake Blount, Chris Canterbury, Felix Hatfield (I don’t know anything about this album. I didn’t find a word about it anywhere but it was on my release radar), Jason Dea West, Drew Beskin & The Sunshine, Lenny Bull (EP), Herman Dune, Maya Hawke, Lande Hekt, Jessie Baylin, Weeping Willows, Sunny Sweeney, Lily Arbor, Quinn Cicala (EP), Marisa Anderson and Status / Non-Status.

A strong Finnish release week too led by the awesome Knife Girl album. I wasn’t that big of fan of the early stuff, but this album is wonderful. Plenty of other gems too. I love the band Lokit, so lovely to have a new EP from them. And how about new Kytäjä album. Well count me in for sure. Then there’s also great albums from Torrances and Radiofiskars Orchestra along with singles from Joni Ekman, The Southgates and Tuomo & Markus.

Two quite different songs can share the international single of the week title. First we have new beautiful solo single from Taylor Kingman. It’s the first outtake from his new album that is due out November 18th on Mama Bird Recording Co. Then we have a real dream collaboration from two huge blog favorites Ian Daniel Kehoe and Luka Kuplowsky. Together they go by the name Ingredient and the first single is now out on the Telephone Explosion Records. I also want to highlight a couple of awesome indie pop singles from Field School and Model Shop. Some other early faves came from Colter Wall, The Delines, Ellen Froese, Eli Pearl, Why Dogs Why, Stephen Becker, Small Sur, Jeremy Squires and The No Ones. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #203

Another week, another new music weekly.

First one as a writer of a 21 year old music blog. Time is a weird concept. But I made a post about that yesterday, so let’s go on with the weekly new music routine.

Marina Allen’s beautiful album and EP from Terry’s Paradise were the key releases for me this week. Really dig that postmodern doowop from Terry’s Paradise. If you dig the new one, I highly recommend the earlier EPs too. There’s some big gems there like Full Moon and Dotted Line. There’s much more of course and the week gave us new albums from Kim Ware & The Good Graces, Veronica Stanton, Skinny Dyck (EP), Amy Ray, Rhett Miller, Sweet Megg, The Beths, Jesca Hoop, The Harlem Gospel Travelers, Ali McGuirk, Lara Taubman, The Commonheart and Iron & Wine (Lori covers EP). And then there’s one originally from 2018 too, but it has a 2022 reissue. That’s the one by country songwriter and musician Tobias Berblinger who also plays in Kassi Valazza’s touring band. I actually found this great album from Kassi’s insta stories. So thank you goes there. The CD and streaming reissue is already available on Ten Dollar Recording Co. Vinyl reissue is coming up in October, so perhaps I’ll share another track when that happens.

The big Finnish release on these evil streaming platforms is the new album from Jani Matti Juhani. It has been out some months for the lovely folks who still buy music, but now it is also streaming. A really strong album. I love it to bits. We also got a debut album from Nina Kaitaranta and then there’s a great run of singles from Of Wild, Silva Emilia, Suosikki and Hexehexe. Ok, I think the last one is from the week before this, but better late than never all the other cliches. It’s a damn good one so sorry about missing it a week ago.

The international single favorite is probably the new one from Julianna Riolino. So look forward to hearing her album when it comes out. Other early faves this week came from David Miner, Twain, Tommy Alexander, Lincoln Barr, MacKenzie Roark, John Fullbright, Drew Beskin & The Sunshine, Mightmare and Pomplamoose / Nataly Dawn / J.E. Sunde. Just to name a few and future spins might make me fall badly for a song that I didn’t name or even include on this way too long playlist.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

1. Marina Allen – Smoke Bush (Centrifics, Fire Records, 2022)

Onechord.net is now 21 + Austin Leonard Jones

One Chord to Another is now 21 years old. Which is quite a long time to do anything let alone a music blog. Something to be proud of I guess. And I am. Ok, somewhat unfortunate that his has turned mostly into a weekly playlist during the recent years because of various reasons. It’s still quite a lot of work and making it takes a large chunk of my every weekend. Plus there’s that weekly blog post too so it most definitely still counts. Hopefully one day I manage to do more, because the original idea was that the playlist will be a bonus or work side-by-side with the other blog content and not become the only/main thing. Zero promises though, because this is just a spare time hobby and often the day job takes the time and energy. Anyway, thank you to each and everyone who have followed this blog journey during the years. It means the world to me.

No big celebration this year, but I thought I’ll have a small party with Austin Leonard Jones. That’s because a) he made one of my favorite albums of the year b) the first single Back in Black Lagoon has a great birthday party music video. The album Dead Calm is full of lovely melodies, witty stories and mellow country groove and it came out July 29th on Perpetual Doom. Here’s the music video along with another personal favorite The Night Parrots.
