OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #198

Another week, another new music weekly.

A big week on the rootsier side of things. Kelsey Waldon, Mariel Buckley, Vandoliers and Cahalen Morrison albums all seem to be excellent and I look forward to giving them more spins during the coming week. Also falling badly in love with that enchantingly beautiful Fonteyn album. Other album release treasures this week came from Lauren Balthrop, Tony Molina, Tim Barry, Thorsten Nesch (EP), Courtney Patton (well not sure if it’s EP or just a two singles, good stuff anyways), Amythyst Kiah (covers EP), Joe Purdy (another volume of outtakes).

The Finnish section has a wonderful run of singles from SaintPolis, Itä-Hollola Installaatio, Iisa and Hannibal & Hot Heros.

And finally the international singles. New Caleb Caudle single has probably been the early favorite. Many other gems too and I’ve been really loving the new ones from Drew Beskin & The Sunshine, Kyle Cox, Mightmare, Freya Josephine Hollick, The Orchids, Mr. Sam & The People People, Garrett T. Capps, Early James feat Sierra Ferrell and Lilly Winwood. Again just to name few. Often something that I don’t end up mentioning on this text part becomes one of the biggest favorites when I listen this more during the week.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. My vacation from the day job is done, which this time might be a good thing for the blog. Usually I’ve done a whole lot of catching up with the blog stuff during the day job vacation, but this time I was lazy and needed a break from everything. So I’ve mostly neglected everything for the last couple of weeks and try to bounce back now. At least I try to be better with the communicating part. We’ll see how that goes. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #197

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’ve been on total vacation mode, but of course listening to new music has been a part of it. So here’s the finest new music I managed to catch while taking it easy.

First let’s take a moment to celebrate Dogbreth. A new one for me that I just found thanks to someone retweeting the album (I think it was Mo Troper), but damn I fell for that record so easily. I urge you to give that one a spin. The album of the week is still the new beauty from long time favorite John Calvin Abney. Also thrilled to have that Robert Leslie album out and available. I’ve shared his charming folk singles on this new music weekly during the past 7-8 months and I’ve loved them all. So lovely to have the record here now and it lives up to my sky high expectations. There’s of course far more and the week gave us new albums from Will Stewart, Eliza Niemi, Colyn Cameron, First Rodeo, Dust Star, Kenny Roby, Lee Bains + The Glory Fires, Reece Sullivan, Rachel Sumner & The Traveling Light, Jeff Crosby, The Western Express, Carl Didur, Julianna Zachariou, Heffner and The Frowning Clouds.

There’s plenty of Finnish gems too. A new favorite has been Aleksi Oksanen and his beautiful new single. I’ve been really digging that one. Also super lovely to have a new Tehosekoitin song. I can’t say that I’ve listened to them all that much during the past two decades, but around 1995-1997 they were the best band in my world and they will forever hold a special place in my heart. But c’mon baby yeah, the new song is also really good, so it’s not here for the nostalgic vibes. A big deal is also the debut EP from Erika Sirola that actually came out on US label Elektra. Other Finnish gems on the list are album from Anton Haring and run of singles from Sam Shingler, Knife Girl, Ria & The Hi-Binders, Sumuhai and Puiset heilat.

The international song that made me immensely happy and a couple of decades younger is the magnificent The Wannadies cover by the awesome UK pop band Mt. Misery. I loved You & Me Song back in the nineties and oh how good it still is. There’s quite a few other new pop gems too from Ducks Ltd, Let’s Whisper, Dazy, 2nd Grade and so forth. And on the album list there were wonderful Dust Star and Dogbreth, so sometimes that pop subtitle of this blog still rings true. On a more general note, somebody should give a culture award to Lame-O Records. They are doing a lot of things right if you are into power pop or whatever you may wanna call it. Other single favorites from abroad came from Anna Tivel, Marina Allen, Little Mazarn, Eli Winter and Bella White. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual annoying promotional nonsense. It all matters no matter how trivial it may seeem. And a huge thank you for all the lovely people who are following this weekly adventure in the world of new music. I really appreciate it. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #196

Another week, another new music weekly.

A vacation edition live from Keuruu. Another bad excuse to possible miss some beautiful new releases. This was quite a big release week too.

Wilder Maker and Friendship were the top picks of the week for me, but the one that I’ve actually spend most time with so far has been that Austin Leonard Jones album. I was vaguely familiar and I loved the advance single. Still it caught me off guard a bit and I fell for the album on first listen. Oh yeah and those Wilder Maker and Friendship are of course damn good. They just didn’t have that surprise factor, because I knew I was going to love them even before hitting play button. Many other gems too and the week gave us new albums from Florist, Skyway Man & Andy Jenkins (EP), Amanda Shires, Nick Nace, Wade Sapp, Andrew Duhon, Wolf Van Elfmand, Triptides, Su Andersson, Sarah Bethe Nelson, Lily Talmers, The Jangles (this was a week ago), Guy Capecelatro III & Mike Effenberger (this has been on Bandcamp for a few months, but now streaming), Zach Welch, Well Well Well and Josh Rouse.

Finnish section is tiny but there is a great EP from Räjäyttäjät along with excellent singles from Kami Mate and Ilja Karsikas.

The international single of the week is the new (should-be) pop hit from Mo Troper. Looking forward to his new album on Lame-O Records. Other big faves this week came from A.O. Gerber, Plains, Tony Molina, Pretty Matty, Maija Sofia, The Harlem Gospel Travelers, Young Gun Silver Fox, Claude Munson, Miko Marks and Veronica Stanton. Again just to name a few and even my favorites might change throughout the week when I have more time to listen to these.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters more than you know. Oh an I’ve been doing some summer cleaning on the inbox, because I had over 7000 unread promo emails. I’m down to a couple hundred and have unsubscribed to a lot of pr lists that rarely send my kind of music. Nothing personal there if I unsubscribed and you are still allowed to send me stuff. Just trying to make room for the artists, labels and pr firms that are in the core of what I do. A one man hobby project just can’t cover all and everything and lately I haven’t really been even reachable to the ones I love. Hopefully this way I can focus a bit more and be better at responding to the emails that matter to me and this little blog. So if you’ve sent me something and I didn’t answer, my sincere apologies. There just isn’t enough time in the world to answer everyone, but hopefully this way I will be less overwhelmed by it all and manage to answer a larger number of them. Love from a distance.

1. Austin Leonard Jones – Night Parrots (Dead Calm, Perpetual Doom, 2022)
2. Wilder Maker – New Anxiety (Male Models, Western Vinyl, 2022)

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #195

Another week, another new music weekly.

It was also another week, another music festival. Therefore this is again a late Sunday edition of the new music weekly.

I haven’t really had the time to listen full albums yet, but long time favorites The Sadies and John Moreland are the leader of the pack this week. We also got most likely great new albums from Nathan Kalish, Elk Hound, The Soft Hills, Color Green, Charlie Reed, Jason Anderson (EP), Joe Pug (well revisited), The Broken Spokes (this was last week, but I found out about it a few hours after I had posted previous episode), Anders Jörnesten, Monica Taylor, Simon Flory (EP), Lindsay Lou (EP), Jenny Mitchell, Darlin’ Brando (EP), Deepest Bison (from June, but I found it today), Pool Kids and Megan Bee. Pretty sure I missed a bunch with this rushed Sunday effort, but I’ll make additions during the coming weeks if stumble upon something I really like.

The Finnish section has an excellent run of singles from Bleak Moments, Samae Koskinen, Sami Heikkilä and The New Magnetic North.

A new Twain single is always a big deal and leads the international singles galore. Other big faves early on have been the songs by Slaid Cleaves, JPW, Julianna Riolino, M. Lockwood Porter, Wilder Maker, Little Mazarn, The Secret Beach, Andrew Combs, John Fullbright, Kelsey Waldon, Good Good Blood and Tiffany Williams. Just to name a few and one that I didn’t name might actually end up being a big fave, because I haven’t had a whole lot to listen to these yet.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. I’m on vacation from the dayjob for the next three weeks, so I may have a bit more time to listen to new music and think about what I want do with this playlist in the future. This won’t completely disappear that’s for sure, but I do need to consider whether this is worth all the hours I put into it or should I just convert it to the kind of on-going endless playlist with daily updates. That would be less of a grind to do, but on the other hand I kind of prefer this way of doing it as a kind of weekly new music mixtape with a more thought song order and flow. Plus that there’s this blog post, so that everything just doesn’t disappear into air and I can circle back and see what I shared a year ago. We’ll see how it goes after the #200 episode. I guess it’s very likely that it stays the same, if I can convince myself that its worth it to spend five hours every weekend into something that has very little relevance. But enough of this rambling for now. Love from a distance.
