OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #160

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for the small delay. I had some errands and internet connection trouble on Saturday and didn’t had the time to work on this until I woke up on Sunday. Which was 2pm actually. I guess I needed the sleep. Anyway, here are the new releases from this week.

A big release week. The album of the week has to be the new Margo Cilker album. I’ve loved all singles and this has been one of my most anticipated record this fall. Such a great record. Another very big deal is that we have new music from Joey Kneiser (Glossary). He has teamed up with another excellent songwriter Lew Card and together they are called Golden and Rust and just released a beautiful debut album. Then we also have a new album from Charles Wesley Godwin who took the americana world by storm with a powerful album a couple years back and this follow-up is equally impressive. And of course that’s just a fraction of all of the action and we also great new releases from The Roseline, Zachary Lucky (cover album), The Landovers (EP), Megan Nash, Aimee Mann, Jennifer O’Connor, Henry Parker, Courtney Hartman, Renee Reed (EP), Neal Francis, Curtis Harding, Mojohand, This Lonesome Paradise, Tasha, Beau Jennings & The Tigers, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Snail Mail, Alicia Stockman and some fairly unknown pop group called ABBA.

Not that many Finnish picks this week, but there are lovely new singles from Marian Valinta, Ananas, Samanna and Bad Sauna.

As for international singles, there’s so much to love and several big personal long time favorites have new songs out there in this lovely world of ours. I’m referring to artists such as Matt Dorrien, Heather Valley, Christian Lee Hutson, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, The Burning Hell, The Explorers Club and Claire Cronin. From a bit more recent favorites (not that they are new to this playlist), I really like the new ones from Iris Marlowe, David James Allen and Lucy Langlas. Just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #159

Another week, another new music weekly.

And also another great release week. A new Caleb Stine album was a happy surprise, because I wasn’t aware of such beauty coming out. That was my top pick of the week along with new albums from Natalie Jane Hill, Emily Scott Robinson and Charlotte Cornfield. They can all share that imaginary album of the week title. That’s not all though. We also got new ones from Mr. Alec Bowman_Clarke (EP), Hayes Carll, Mick Mullin, Lilli Lewis, Chris Kasper (EP), Lunar Vacation, Travis Feutz (EP), Melanie Beth Curran, Liz Jones & Broken Windows (Spotify just has the gorgeous single, so go to Bandcamp for the full album), Fortitude Valley, Alcopops (EP), Marissa Nadler, Billy Bragg, Pauline Andres (reissue), Charissa Hoffman (EP), Brandy Zdan, Anna Vincent, Eleanor Buckland and Simon Linsteadt (EP).

The Finnish section is a bit short this time around. It’s led by the wonderful Linda Fredriksson album and also contains singles from Palor and Color Dolor. Plus revisits last week’s gorgeous Tvärtom album. I’m sure there had to be more.

And finally the international singles and there was so much love in this category. The Delines, Hurray For the Riff Raff and Jake Xerxes Fussell all announced new albums and released first outtakes. This is big deal. Julie Doiron and Charles Wesley Godwin released further greatness from their forthcoming albums and a long time blog favorite Matt Paxton released a great new song. Oh yeah and there’s a new double single from the magnificent Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide / Säkert). I’m a big fan, so that was a pleasant surprise. Somehow I had missed the new Apollo Flowerchild single earlier this month, but it’s here now and it’s so damn good. And that’s of course just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #158

Another week, another new music weekly.

Let’s start with the Finnish stuff this time around. Mostly because Teini-Pää and Tvärtom really lighted up my world yesterday. I instantly fell in love with that new Tvärtom album and later on gave a spin to that new Teini-Pää single and loved every second of it. I had one of those weeks when I was close to pull the plug on this blog, but now I’m all rejuvenated thanks to these lovely bands. There’s also other Finnish beauties later on the playlist. These are new albums from Tero-Petri & Korvaamattomat and Sarparanta plus singles from Maanvaiva, Jori Hulkkonen, Lone Deer Laredo, Rakki-Sakke ja Lahjomaton Miro and Richard Dawson & Circle (I think we can give Finnish passport to Richard Dawson if he is collaborating with Circle).

The international album of the week is the new Belaver album. I’ve loved all the advance singles and the album lives up to my sky high expectations. Robert Ellis produced it and released it on his record label. It’s kind of the reason why I found him, but his songs are the reason I stuck around. Another big one is the new Adeline Hotel album. That’s far from all though and we also got new albums from Mark Fredson, Bedouine, Trey Burnart Hall (EP), Nick Delffs (EP), The Surfing Magazines, Guided By Voices, Trace Mountains, La Luz, Hand Habits, Abby Huston, Gold Dust (this came out a week ago, but I missed it then), Helado Negro, Tonstartssbandht, D.C.R. Pollock, Zachary Williams, Ryan Sambol (this was early in the year, but I just found it because Perpetual Doom will be releasing it on vinyl), Norman Blake, Moot Davis, Johnny Gallagher (this was a week ago, but it slipped under my radar then), Nada Surf (EP), Jackson+Sellers and Dave Hause.

The imaginary international single of the week award probably goes to the new The Whitmore Sisters single. Also very fond of the new Leche Malo song. An of course there’s far more like new ones from Maya De Vitry, Carson McHone, Neal Francis, Alanna Gurr, Cedric Noel, Carrie Biell, Blue Wilson, Ryan Pollie and so forth. Then there’s some cover magic from J.E. Sunde and Memory Spells. Again just to name a few. There’s gems throughout the whole playlist.

That all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual annoying promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

1. Belaver – Here It Comes (Lain Prone, Niles City Records, 2021)
2. Adeline Hotel – In a Simple Way (The Cherries Are Speaking, Ruination Record Co, 2021)

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #157

Another week, another new music weekly.

Another NHL season too, so I’ve been more focused on hockey this week. But there’s always time for new music too, so here’s my favorite new releases of the week.

There’s again plenty to love and some big personal favorites released new albums. Impossible to name an album of the week, because Le Ren, TK & The Holy Know-Nothings, Lilly Hiatt all mean so much to me. And then there’s even longer time favorites like Dean Wareham and Danny George Wilson and a power pop blast from Mo Troper. Oh yeah and that solo album from Buffalo Nichols seems very special (you may remember him from roots duo Nickel&Rose). Then there’s also new albums from Humbird, Gabi Hartmann (EP), The Courettes, Erin Enderlin (EP), Joe Nolan, Pokey LaFarge, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (cover album), Gone to Color, Ike Reilly, The Roomsounds, Vanishing Twin and Julia Shapiro. Edit: I added Joseph M album. I’ve shared the singles before and just noticed that the album came out this week.

From Finland we have wonderful albums from Ty Roxy and Astral Brain (part Finnish, Stockholm-based and on legendary indie pop label Shelflife). Then there’s also singles from M, Bobby Oroza and Vellamo plus a revisit to Astrid Swan’s fabulous album from last week.

And finally the international singles. Brigid Mae Power and Erin Rae can share the single of the week honor. Love those songs. Some other big favorites came from Drew Beskin, MAITA, Steph Green, Michael Hurley, Trey Burnart Hall, Andrew Gabbard, Renee Reed, Belaver and Matthew McNeal. Again just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

That’s all for now. Like, follow, share and all the usual promotional nonsense. I probably should make some kind of cover art / logo for the playlist, but I’m a) too lazy b) don’t have the skill c) I kinda like that it shows the four top picks, because the playlist itself isn’t important, the albums / songs are. See you next time. Love from a distance.

1. TK & The Holy Know-Nothings – The Incredible Heat Machine (The Incredible Heat Machine, Mama Bird Recording Co, 2021)
2. Buffalo Nichols – Living Hell (Buffalo Nichols, Fat Possum Records, 2021)
