OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #125

Another week, another new music weekly.

Kind of tough week at the day job, so the week kind of flew by. However, I even surprised myself by doing a one short small blog entry that was not a playlist. Nothing to celebrate, but hey at least it’s more than what I’ve done lately and hopefully it won’t be a one-off thing. At least I have another one coming next week with some recent country favorites. This weekly playlist also reached 400 followers last week (at least temporarily), which was nice. This won’t ever be viral and it doesn’t need to be but I still admit that it’s nice when that number slowly rises. Gives some extra motivation to keep on spending hours on this every weekend. So please do hit that follow button, if you like what I do here. Anyway, enough of the mumbo jumbo and on to the new music weekly.

Fruit Bats, Jay Gonzalez and Daniel Markham led the way this week. Other big album releases came from Adult Mom, Ian Daniel Kehoe (second of his 2020 bandcamp album releases now streaming too), Sara Renberg, Painted Shrines, Jimbo Mathus and Andrew Bird, Bernice, Elizabeth & The Catapult, Megan Lacy (EP), Garrison Starr, Jackie Darlene, Carl Anderson (EP), Jason Ringenberg and Leon III. Oh yeah and that excellent Wake Up album is a few weeks old. I just found it a week ago thanks to Greg from the legendary Captains Dead blog. And as usual the playlist revisits a few albums from the past week.

The big Finnish thing is the double album release from Janne Laurila. There’s both a solo album and a colloboration album with the almighty Hot Heros. Both are extremely highly recommended. Other Finnish cuts this week are the singles from Anne-Mari Kivimäki ja Palomylly and The Flaming Sideburns.

There was so much to love on the international singles front. The wonderful new Jeffrey Martin single was probably my favorite of the week, but I also really love the new singles by Damien Jurado, Tristen, Fiver, Maxwell Stern, Michael Feuerstack, Annie Oakley, John Andrews and the Yawns, Jesse Aycock, Max and the Martians, Jerry Leger, Tasha just to name a few. Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

Isaac Vallentin, Clara Mann, Dan Edmonds and Steady Holiday

A blog post that is not a playlist. Who would have thought. Well it might be just a one-off and there are hardly any words, but anyway, I wanted to highlight a few releases that might not be that high profile in the grand scheme of things, but mean the world to me. Kicking things off in Montreal, Quebec with Isaac Vallentin’s gorgeous third album “…” that came out on the 3rd of February. Here’s the music video for Winter Song along with my own favourite, almost ten minutes long The Ballad of Nunangat that honour the lives and voices of Indigenous Canadians.

Moving on to Bristol, UK for the brand new Clara Mann EP Consolations that came out last week on Sad Club Records. I pretty much came a fan of singer-songwriter Clara Mann during my first spin of her debut single I Didn’t Know You Were Leaving Today last November. I instantly loved it and I’ve felt the same way about every Clara Mann I’ve heard to date.

Back in Canada for another treasure from the February 26 release vault. Former Harlan Pepper Dan Edmonds released a new charming solo album Good Fortune Assembly. The song The Morning is just pure gold. Dan Edmonds, Luka Kuplowsky and Caitlin Woelfle-O’Brien create some magic together there and the music video is also excellent.

Let’s wrap this small blog entry in Los Angeles, California with the sweetest music video I know. It’s the ending song Love Me When I Go To Sleep from the new Steady Holiday album Take The Corners Gently. Such a lovely and heartfelt video. I love it wholeheartedly. Goes without saying that the album is also excellent.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #124

Another week, another new music weekly.

Things are heating up. Not a chance to have enough time to listen everything before making this. So there might be some good stuff missing. Actually I even intentionally left out some very good singles, because this is already longer than anyone will listen.

My favorite release of the week is the new EP by Clara Mann. One of my favorite things is finding new favorite artists and some months ago Clara Mann won my heart over during my first listen of her debut single. Now the full EP is here and it’s such a beauty. Some other big ones that I had highlighted were new albums by Chris Pierce, Karima Walker, Randolph’s Leap and Dan Edmonds. But there’s also so much more and most of these sounded great on quick listen and might become even more important when I have some time to properly listen to them. There’s new albums from Sara Petite, Olivia Ellen Lloyd, Charley Crockett, David Huckfelt, Mando Saenz, Bobby Dove (this ones a couple weeks old, but I just got the memo and I’m falling in love fast), Simon Flory, Ben Trickey, Julien Baker, Craig Finn (RSD release now streaming too), Graham Hunt, Quivers (R.E.M. Cover album), Mikey Erg (maybe not the kind of stuff I share a lot these days, but hell yeah this is awesome), Mo Kenney (Covers record) and Nick Cave & Warren Ellis.

On the Finnish side of things, we got albums from Antero Kaksikäsi, Black Twig, Iisa and Markus Perttula. There’s also singles from Vino Puu and Kynnet. Oh yeah and a few weeks old one from AK-77. It’s actually a cover of Cajun Moon and it caught my eye/ear when a FB friend (thanks Satu) posted it. I was curious even before hitting play, because they had turned Cajun into Keuruu and well I’m originally from Keuruu. Which was nice, but of course the fact that it mentions Keuruu is just a little bonus and the main thing is that it’s a great version.

And then the international singles. The big one here is the first single from the next Vanessa Peters album Modern Age that will drop into to the record stores and our hearts on the 23rd of April. Other personal favorites are the new singles from Vandoliers, Charlie Marie, Melissa Carper (again so great, it’s going to be one hell of a record), Leanne Betamosake Simpson, Dan Wriggins just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #123

Another week, another new music weekly.

Still somewhat quiet on the release front. Or maybe not, because I could easily come up with close to 50 songs. There’s always plenty to love.

This week we got new albums from Reed Turchi (two albums), Katy Kirby, Valley Maker, The Hold Steady, John Paul Keith, Ian Fisher, Cassandra Jenkins, Spencer Burton, Lael Neale, Ryan Dugre, Adeline Hotel, Senora May, John Blek, Corvair, Wild Pink and Tindersticks. Plus an EP from Hand Habits. The album by Steven van Betten and Andrew Rowan came out a week or two ago, but I only found it this week.

The Finnish part this week has a new the new album from Jani Matti Juhani (more excellent Elvis covers in Finnish) and single from Pekka Laine.

And finally the international singles. Amythyst Kiah released a new version of Black Myself. Still extremely powerful. Other big things were new singles from Johanna Samuels, Janet Simpson, Esther Rose, Karima Walker, Nick Shoulders (this was last week, but somehow missed it), Kaitlin Butts, Kassi Valazza, Corinne Sharlet and Joe Kaplow. Just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. My apologies that I’ve only done this one weekly post during the pandemic era. The reason has been sort of a combination of the pandemic, personal health struggles, overall laziness and spending too much of my spare time watching hockey games and art house movies. I’ll try to get back to the other kind of posts too at some point, but tough to say when exactly. Anyway, it was nice to learn that someone actually misses that stuff. It does give some motivation to continue, because my self-doubt ridden mind often wonders if I’m just throwing songs and words into a void. I probably should also try to figure out if I want to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of this blog, because September comes surprisingly fast. Anyway, enough of this pointless chat. Here is the playlist for the week. Love from a distance.
