Spencer Burton, Christopher Denny, J. E. Sunde

I have never properly listened to Canadian indie rock band called Attack In Black. I think I probably should, because I seem to love everything the band members have done since then. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you are well aware that I’m a huge fan of both Daniel Romano and Ian Kehoe (the man behind Marine Dreams). They both played in Attack in Black. And so did this man called Spencer Burton who is about to release his solo album next month. The album Don’t Let The World See Your Love was produced by his former band colleague Daniel Romano and will come out on Dine Alone Records on the 16th of September. This one below is the latest single from the forthcoming album. It’s called A Body Is All She Ever Let Me Hold and it sounds mighty good to me.

The new Christopher Denny album If The Roses Don’t Kill Us is out now on Partisan Records. I was very much into the early single Our Kind of Love few months ago, but the album release somehow slid under my radar. Thankfully I stumbled upon this now, because it still sounds excellent to me. I have to properly check out the full album during the next few days. This is the amazing Our Kind of Love.

Last week the new J.E. Sunde album Shapes That Kiss The Lips Of God kept me company on my way to work and back. It was pretty much the toughest work week I’ve had and I was exhausted both mentally and physically. J.E Sunde might not have been able to take care of that physical side, but certainly did wonders to the mental side. By turning a key in the car, there was again a little bit of sanity in the world and the struggle of a 12-hour workday had been replaced by a steady flow of timeless music. This might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m so completely addicted to this. Especially Dream Baby and A Blinding Flash Of Flight which are both so wonderful. I also had to include the Easy Kid video by Jon Burns, which is definitely one of the best lyric videos I’ve seen.

Lac Belot – Elizabeth EP

lacbelot

Something rather special came out today. A few weeks ago I received an email that introduced Lac Belot to me. I didn’t know Jarno Takkumäki (the man behind Lac Belot) beforehand, but I was hooked like five seconds after I had pushed the play button. The song in question was the title track Elizabeth from Lac Belot’s debut EP. Further studies showed that the whole EP was absolutely wonderful and I loved it wholeheartedly. Actually Elizabeth might be my least favourite song on this EP that was released by Roisto Oy. That just shows the overall quality of this. Lac Belot’s Elizabeth EP is refreshing and endearingly beautiful folky pop treasure. Besides being as beautiful as your girl/boyfriend’s eyes, I like that there’s also a certain lighter (and almost a little playful) side. The whole thing sounds rich and the vocal phrasing is so marvellous. I really can’t think of any good comparisons. My mind has wondered from Joy of a Toy by Kevin Ayers to more sing-y Bill Callahan, but neither really makes any sense whatsoever. I suppose you could throw in some modern indie folk artists in there as well, but I find it rather hard to lock this one into some specific cabinet. And I think that’s a good thing. I just have to lock this one into that cabinet for extremely highly recommended music.

This one is also one of those personally meaningful releases. It’s not a secret that the thought of letting onechord.net gently slide into retirement sounds very appealing these days. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens sometime soon, even though my goal still is to keep it alive until it reaches 15 years. The moments like the day I got this mail about Lac Belot are still a great reason to keep on writing this. After all, what could be better than completely fall into something in a split second and then just waiting eagerly to be able to share it with the world (or the 3 regular readers)? But now I better just stop this pointless rambling. You are already well aware how I feel about it. Just hit that play button below to hear the whole amazing release and make up your own mind.

Freschard & Stanley Brinks

freschard

As previously mentioned, my biggest musical obsession this summer has been Freschard. Cheese and crackers anyone. I don’t even like Cheese and Crackers, but Freschard still makes me want to buy them anyway. So freakin’ addictive stuff. I have her albums Boom Biddy Boom and Shh... and I could listen to them all day long. I really love to walk around the town and just listen to Shh..

I also really like Stanley Brinks album Gin that is also out on Fika Recordings (just like Boom Biddy Boom). I have some Herman Dune stuff, but I haven’t followed him that closely until this year. There’s one problem with getting addicted to Stanley and Freschard. They have released so much music that I need a mortgage to buy all of it. These are couple of my favourites from Gin. I Wanted You and Parking Lots.

And that’s not all, there’s one more exciting factor to consider. There will be a new duo album from Stanley Brinks & Freschard coming out on August 25th. It’s called Pizza Espresso and the pre-order is already available on the Fika Recordings Bandcamp. I look forward to hearing the full album in a few weeks. After all, this has been a year of Freschard & Stanley Brinks for me. This is excellent Take It Easy from Pizza Espresso.

And then finally. Cheese and Crackers of course. The loveliest musical earworm I can think of. I don’t even want to get rid of it.

Nathan K. – Methodist Girls

nathank

I’m still way behind and have a lot of good summer releases to go through. One of them is Methodist Girls by Nathan K. Nathan K is a folk singer-songwriter from Michigan and this new album came out a month ago. Methodist Girls has gotten a lot of air time on my iPod during the summer. It has been rather magnificent dreamy indie folk for these lazy summer days. Here are couple of my own favourites. 1993 and Most Birthdays.
