OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #153

Another week, another new music weekly.

Back to the regular schedule. I hope I didn’t miss too much while writing all the nostalgic 20 years posts. It seemed like a rather busy release week. I also wanted to get this done rather quickly on Friday night, so I can then just rest the final vacation weekend before returning to the day job hell. I might something tomorrow, if I remember something or learn about something. Oh and if you want to give this 20 year old blog a birthday present, follow this new music weekly on Spotify.

I haven’t had the time to listen full albums yet, but that Charley Crockett album is probably the first in line. Although on quick spin that Jesse Woods albums sounds magnificent. I wasn’t that familiar with him before this week, but I think I’m going to fall in love with this new album. Then there’s that Lloyd Taylor-Clark album that seems to be so sweet and beautiful. Loved the singles and look forward to diving into the album. That’s far from all though and there’s also new albums from Adia Victoria, Stranded Horse, Bea Troxel, Ana Egge, The Felice Brothers, Caitlin Jemma, Rod Gator, C. Gibbs, The Northern Belle, Gregory Ackerman, Kirby Brown, Jose Gonzalez and Scott Lavene. Going to be a busy week for me to listen all these beauties.

The Finnish highlight is the new absolutely wonderful Amuri single. I just listened it several times in a row, because I loved it so much. We also got new singles from Vino Puu, Lettoman, Rantapenger and partly Finnish Astral Brain. That Lettoman single works best, if you listen to the whole three part piece and not just the one that I have on the playlist. Oh yeah and there’s also a special project between Richard Dawson and the legendary Finnish band Circle.

And finally the international singles. There’s a new Le Ren single from the forthcoming album and of course I love it. Kristina Murray and Ryan Necci & The Buffalo Gospel both released new stuff and that matters a great deal. The new TK & The Holy Know-Nothings song is probably still my favorite single of the week. That’s so damn good. Natural Bridges found some unreleased gold from the cupboards. It’s a bonus track for the forthcoming album reissue. And there’s plenty more. Aaron Lee Tasjan made some cover magic for the Neal Casal foundation, new Natalie Jane Hill single is superb, Chris Kasper released new stuff after a while, Andrew Gabbard rules always and so does Dean Wareham. Everything would be worth of a name drop, but you’ll find them from the list below.

That’s all for now. Thank you again for the past 20 years and hopefully you stay with me for the next decade. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #152

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’ve been on bit of vacation mode, so my apologies if I missed a ton of new releases. Quite a big release week and there’s plenty to love and cherish.

My first pick is probably the new Icarus Phoenix album. I kinda slept with the first one last year, because it was cassette only at the time. But I’ve been loving that a lot this year and now we have a brand new beauty. It’s sure seems like long time favorite Drew Danburry has found a whole new level of brilliance with this Icarus Phoenix stuff.

There’s far more though. Daniel Romano hit a double with both a studio album and a live album and new Romano music never stops being a big deal. Riddy Arman album was one of the most anticipated country albums of the fall and it sure turned out to be a great one. LadyCouch led by Allen Thompson and Keshia Bailey finally released an album after a great run of singles. That’s super important and so is a new Kashena Sampson album. And then there’s also new albums by Dori Freeman, Smug Brothers, Bobby’s Oar (EP), Matthew Fowler, Kacey Musgraves, Low, Lauren O’Connell (covers album) and Jeshua Marshall.

Oh and one more that’s very dear to my heart. I just noticed that Steve Sloane has put his stuff back on Spotify and therefore I included a song from both of his magnificent 2021 releases Chewing the Shadows and Time is a Threat. They can also be found from Bandcamp where I bought them earlier in the year.

The Finnish section has some treasures too. Biggest one being the new Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L album. We also got an album from Lyyti and an awesome run of singles from Astrid Swan, Anis Kiitu, Arppa and Rohkeat Kuvat. I also included another song from last week’s gorgeous Mustat Kalsarit album.

Last but not least the international (should-be) hits. Some big album announcements in the americana spectrum from Lilly Hiatt and Charles Wesley Godwin and the new songs rule my world. Some other big faves came from David James Allen, I’m Kingfisher, Harrison Whitford, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Curtis Harding, Amanda Shires, Claire Cronin, George Is Lord, Charlotte Cornfield and so forth. As usual, all are worth a namedrop and some not mentioned here might even eventually become the biggest favorites.

That’s all for this week. By the time of the next music weekly, this blog has become 20 years old. A long time to do anything, let alone a music blog on your spare time. Let’s see if I manage to address it somehow. One thing that is already happening is that I’m making a playlist with somewhat random favorites from the 20 years of the blog. Random because making it complete is an impossible task. Tough to handle 20 years without forgetting some important ones (and well I might assume I already added some that I actually didn’t). You’ll find that here, but there will be more additions. And yes it will be longer than anyone will listen. But that’s it for now. Love from a distance.

1. Icarus Phoenix – Madam Seawright (No Tree Can Grow to Heaven, 2021)
2. Daniel Romano – Still Dreaming (Cobra Poems, You’ve Changed Records, 2021)

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #151

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for the small delay this time around. Lately I’ve done this on Saturday, but I was just too tired to finish it last night. Early on I actually did this usually on Sunday, but nowadays I’ve preferred Saturday just because then I can just rest the whole Sunday without the pressure of finishing this hanging over me. A bit less album releases this week (probably due to Labor Day in the US like a friend pointed out to me), but somehow I still managed to come up with a 60 plus song playlist.

My albums of the week are from Mitch Dillon’s Compulsive Ramblers and Nico Hedley. The first one is actually from last week’s patch, but I found yesterday thanks to the great Australian blog Post to Wire. Instantly loved that record. Even early Wilco came to mind here and there, but that’s not the whole story. Highly recommend checking that out. Nico’s all singles have already been on the previous playlists and the whole record is also excellent. Other big album releases came from Kayla Ray, Motorists, Monnone Alone, Dolour (part 3 of Origin Story on Spotify and the whole thing is now out available), The Artisanals, Kayla Von Der Heide, Moviola, Geordie Gordon, Rainwater (a slightly older one that I found thanks to the legendary Small Albums), Ben Stalets, David Ferguson, Dazy (another bit older one, credit to Aleksi / Päivän Biisit for bringing this to my attention) and Gerycz / Powers / Rolin.

A pretty big Finnish release week too. New great albums by Mustat Kalsarit, Jukka Nissinen, Sami Yaffa and Sepikka led the charge, but we also got an EP from Lapsuus and a great run of singles from Laura Moisio, J.Karjalainen, Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki, Ananas (a few weeks old, but finally here), Marian Valinta, Tero-Petri & Korvaamattomat, Nyrkkitappelu and Marko Nyberg. All are awesome in different ways, but if you only have time for a few, my personal faves are probably the single from Laura Moisio and albums from Mustat Kalsarit and Jukka Nissinen.

Last but not least, the international (should be) hits. Maybe I’m a fragile weirdo, but the song I loved the most this week and had the biggest impact on me was probably the new Belaver song. Final single from the Icarus Phoenix album that’s out in a week is also so wonderful as are the new singles from Andy Shauf, MAITA, Adeline Hotel, Josh King, Henry Parker, Rachel Fannan & Jacob Miller, Pony Bradshaw, The Black Dove and so forth. Matthew Milia’s song has been here before, but I absolutely love it and he made a new radio edit for it so why not include it again. It also shows that you can still do it the old-fashioned way and release singles after the album release instead of the current method where half of the record are singles before the album release. And then there’s of course the minor thing that ABBA is back with a couple of new songs with a full album on the way. The songs are really good too and sound like ABBA, so it does seem like they are continuing their legacy instead of throwing a shade to their glorious past. ABBA’s not one of my all-time favorite bands or anything, but I definitely love the early stuff. If there’s a word pop in the subtitle of this blog, how could I really not love them. This world hasn’t seen many better pop songwriters. Oh yeah, and Two Cow Garage released a new song, but I think that’s only on Bandcamp. As usual everything else would be worthy of a namedrop too, but you’ll find them from the list below.

That’s all for now. 12 days to go until this blog is 20 years old. Then I can retire and pass the torch to someone else. Love from a distance.

1. Kayla Ray – Tree of Life (Songs of Extreme Isolation, Economic Crisis, & Other Funny Things, 2021)

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #150

Another week, another new music weekly.

Also another small milestone, because this is a weekly #150. Thank you to all the listeners and readers who enjoy this new music project of mine. No matter whether it’s regularly or occasionally. And if you do enjoy it, I appreciate all follows, likes and shares. I have zero need for this to be super viral or anything, but compiling this takes about five hours of my every weekend. Therefore all such interactions matter and convince me that I’m not such wasting all that time for nothing and I’m not just sending these songs into a void. This will continue for as long as I enjoy making it and I have the energy for it. I have no idea whether that is two months or two years. I’m pretty worn out right now with the continuously rising physical demand of my day job and the year and half long saga with what I assume (but can’t be sure) is related to long covid. Thankfully I have a 2-week vacation coming up week from now. Anyway, enough of this rambling. Time to dive into the new releases of the week.

My album of the week probably is the new Summer Dean album closely followed by Tre Burt, Tim Easton and Jason Eady. I think these are all tremendous records full of exceptional songwriting. That’s not all though and we also got new albums from Kyle Cox (Muppets cover album), Adam Lee (EP), The Resonant Rogues (live to tape EP), Della Mae, Nellen Dryden, Steve Gunn, Grayson Jenkins, Suzanne Santo, Madi Diaz, Big Red Machine, Marisa Anderson & William Tyler and Bambies (this maybe came out a week ago). I did quite like Turnstile too, but it’s not really my cup of tea in the end and therefore didn’t include it here. Definitely worth checking out though. Only on bandcamp, there’s at least the new album from Junior.

From Finland we have a bunch of great singles. Absolutely love the new Pekko Käppi single. Partly Finnish Astral Brain has a great single on the legendary indie pop label Shelflife. Last week I forgot to include the new Jalmari Olavinpoika single and I’ve been ashamed because it’s rather perfect. Then there’s also new beauties from The Lovematches, Matti and Keidas. The biggest thing out of Finland is of course the fact that most likely the all-time best Finnish album is now out on vinyl for the first time. I’m of course talking about Suudelmilla by Karkkiautomaatti.

My early favorite from international singles is probably that new Sylvie song. Loved the first one too, so I look forward to hearing the whole EP. I’m also very fond of the new singles from Natalie Jane Hill, Erin Rae, Bea Troxel, Lydia Loveless, Riddy Arman, Charley Crockett, Steph Green, Dean Wareham (this is a week or two old, but I somehow missed it), The Good Graces, Kashena Sampson and so forth. Again just to name a few. They are all worth a namedrop, but you’ll find them all from the list below.

That’s all for this week. Three weeks to go until this blog hits 20 years. I still have nothing planned, so there probably won’t be a big celebration this time around. Unless I get some sort of sudden inspiration to set something up once I get to vacation in a week. Seems unlikely. Most likely there will only be just a blog entry full of nostalgic mumbo jumbo. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. If you want to find the older ones I’ve moved them to the weekly playlist archive. So hit that link above and I’m sure you’ll find this playlist too.
