OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #145

Another week, another new music weekly.

A bit behind schedule, because I spent the weekend following my other passion. I know more about who went 43rd overall the NHL Draft than I know what releases came out this week. This stuff had to wait until Sunday morning this week, because of all draft and trade action in the NHL and I probably missed a lot by just quickly putting this together.

I think that I start with the international singles this time around, because there’s some that matter a great deal to me. Hezekiah Jones and Myriam Gendron are big personal favorites and they both released a wonderful new single this week. I think for Hezekiah Jones it’s just a single, but a special one for sure. As for Myriam Gendron, there’s a whole new album coming out this fall and I can’t wait to hear it. I’ve already deserved a spot for it on my EOTY list. Those two are not all though. The new Sylvie project sounds absolute marvellous and then there’s also new singles from Corinne Sharlet, Kashena Sampson, Mercy Bell, Ryan Curtis, Nathan Kalish, Sean Rowe, Monnene Alone, Andrew Gabbard and Beachwood Sparks & GospelbeacH (Neal Casal cover). Again just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

This seems to somewhat slower release week on the album front. At least based on my not that deep glance. There’s some great ones though like new Mega Bog, Rodney Crowell, Pony Hunt, Emily Duff, Leon Bridges and Robert Harrison (solo from Cotton Mather leader).

The Finnish treasures this week are singles from The New Magnetic North, Gim Kordon, Katnes and Tuomo (this last one has been out a few weeks).

That’s it for this week. I’ll try to do a better job next week. At least things should get quieter on NHL after Wednesday’s free agency. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #144

Another week, another new music weekly.

This is a big release week for me, because there’s new Matthew Milia album in this world and he has been my favorite songwriter for the past decade. Keego Harbor is utterly wonderful and I highly recommend it to each and everyone. For me Matthew Milia is on the same level as my songwriting heroes like John K. Samson and Adam Schlesinger.

We also got a new album from other huge favorite of mine. I’ve only been more excited about Matthew’s album, because Anna Tivel’s new album Blue World contains revisioned versionw of songs from her magical song catalogue. But oh my how beautiful these new versions are. I listened the whole thing with headphones last night and loved every second I spent on its company. Definitely a must listen/buy even if you already know the songs by heart like I do.

That’s far from all and we also got excellent new records from John R. Miller, The Great Park, Kate Vargas, Wojtek the Bear (the awesome Scottish band that reminds me a lot of the Finnish greats Sister Flo), Daniel Wylie’s Cosmic Rough Riders (this one’s a couple of weeks old, but somehow managed to miss it at the time), Anthonie Tonnon, Cameron Knowler, Trippers & Askers, Sleepy Jean, Erik Shicotte (EP) and Esther Rose (or well cover EP of her songs by other artists).

Just a couple of Finnish treats this time and these are an album from Guggenheim-projektz and single from Tender Lakes. I’m sure there had to be more.

And as for international singles, there’s plenty to love. Some early favorites for me are the new sigles from Daniel Romano, Jennah Barry, Tre Burt, Erin Enderlin, Summer Dean, James McMurtry, Cale Tyson, Durand Jones & The Indications, Lloyd Taylor-Clark, Adam Lee, Charlie Parr and so forth. Just to name a few. Some stunning cover magic too from Courtney Marie Andrews and S.G. Goodman.

That’s all for this week. This blog is 20 years old in exactly two months. The last year has been more than just a bit of a grind and I haven’t done a very good job, but at least the blog is still somewhat alive and that milestone starts to look achievable. Which is nice. After that it’s to time to kick the can down the road and set a new goal at 23 years and call it a day if i even reach that. All About Chad already told us in the nineties that when twenty three strikes, you’re out.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #143

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for being so lazy during my vacation. I had plans to do more blog stuff, but the heatwave got to me and I didn’t get much done. Hopefully I’ll manage to do more on the second part of the vacation in September when the blog hits 20 as well. Anyway, let’s at least do this weekly post, because there’s lots of big album and single releases this week.

The album of the week for me is the new Andrew Bryant album A Meaningful Connection. I’m a long time fan and absolute love this new album. Another big one for me is the second album from Jeremy Ferrara. That’s not all though and we also got excellent new albums from Shaela Miller, Anne Soldaat, Wild Earp, Ben Reddell Band and Babehoven.

The Finnish section only has two great singles from Teini-Pää and Keidas. I’m sure there had to more.

And last but not least the international (should-be) hits. There’s so much to love here. We got the first singles from forthcoming albums by Riddy Arman, Margo Cilker, TK & The Holy Know-Nothings, Strand of Oaks and Charley Crockett. Kind of a big deal if you ask me. There’s also further magic from forthcoming Josienne Clarke, Scott Hirsch, Kate Vargas and Jeremy Squires albums. Oh and that Apollo Flowerchild single is pure gold and we also got some pop heaven in the middle from the likes of Motorists and Ducks Ltd. Also a new from from the Swiss giants Black Sea Dahu, first one from the Mercy Bell EP and a whole lot more. Too much to mention them all here, but you’ll find them below.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #142

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’ve been on vacation mode and I might have missed a thing or two. Plus I’ve been completely obsessed with that Hurry album that came out last week and have listened to it countless amount of hours. Maybe this is still pop blog and I’m still a pop kid (or well pop middle-age man). I also did some mid-year lists earlier in the week, so check out that post if you want to know what I’ve loved during the first half of the year. Besides that Hurry album. But let’s stop this intro chat and go into the new releases. Looks like a bit slower one after last week’s monster week. No suprise though, because the July 4th week seem to always be a slow release week. But we did get some albums that I’m very excited about.

The key album release trio for me is from long time favorites Huck Notari, Drew Beskin and Michael James Tapscott. I’m a big fan of all of them and their new albums seem wonderful on quick listen. The big new find for me is a UK pop band called Mt. Misery. Their album came out a week ago, but I found it today thanks to John Jervis and have been loving it a lot. There’s also a new album from Flatland Cavalry and that is definitely something that I need to give a listen.

From Finland, we’ll have a new EP from Kami Mate and rarities collection from Eerie Deer. Plus singles from Räjäyttäjät, J.A. Mäki and Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L.. I also included Anton Haring single that I forgot to put on this a few weeks ago. There was probably more..
