OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #149

Another week, another new music weekly.

Oh my. This was one heavy release week. Too much to handle for one man in one day, so I’m sure I messed up somewhere along the way and forgot something crucial. I’ll fill up the holes in the coming weeks. Not complaining though. Lovely problem to have, because there aren’t many things I love more than listening to new music.

There’s not a clear album of the week, because I was eagerly waiting for so many of these. The one that probably hit me the most was that MJ Lenderman EP, because it had certain caught me off guard factor. I had not even heard of him before this weekend, but instantly fell in love with that EP when I started listening to it. Anyway, here’s the full list of new albums/EPs that you’ll find from the playlist below. It takes a while to even write it down, let alone listen. We got new releases from Chris Acker, Sierra Ferrell, Garrett T. Capps, James McMurtry, Matt Paxton, MJ Lenderman (EP), William Harries Graham (EP), Darrin Bradbury, Kirty, Maya Elise & The Good Dream, Ryan Necci & The Buffalo Gospel (EP of old songs, somehow I managed to miss this last week. Shame on me, because I love Buffalo Gospel and all these songs matter a great deal to me), Nathan Salsburg, Joe Troop, Sturgill Simpson, Malcolm Holcombe, Billy Law, Connie Smith, Lorkin O’Reilly, Timid, the Brave, Alien Boy, Pleasure Horse, Angel Olsen (EP of covers), Brent Windler, Bnny, GA-20, Nick Jaina (previously only Bandcamp), John Statz (only on Bandcamp, just the single on Spotify), Shannon & The Clams, Karen Jonas (EP), Grace Morrison, Chris J Norwood and Lindsay Jarman. I hope that was all.

This week the playlist also has a small pop blast from the past aka Ben Reiser appreciation section. I don’t know how things are in the rest of the underground pop world, but here in Finland All About Chad’s 1995 album Down in Front is heralded as a true classic. Well at least among the folks who grew up listening to Räkärodeo radio show back in the nineties. I’m one of them and Down in Front is one of my all-time favorite albums. The big news for All About Chad fans like yours truly is that lately Ben Reiser has been uploading his musical adventures to the streaming platforms and there’s plenty of previously unheard gems available (unheard at least in my corner of the world). For example there’s an album called The Hippopotamus Polka from Tenderizer that contains songs that were first meant to be on the second All About Chad album. It was only a small local cassette release at the time, so this is kind of like the first real release of it. I also included a song from that classic All About Chad album and one from Swim Team (another lost pop gem). So there’s a trio of perfect US pop songs for you. This blog might have drifted towards folk and americana throughout the years, but this kind of stuff will always be the foundation of my music taste.

The Finnish part of this has a run of singles from J.Matkala, Sami Yaffa, Antti Autio, Lyyti and Ty Roxy. Plus an album from a new band called Robinia Spines that sounded really good on quick listen. I need to give that a proper listen when I’ve done this weekly.

And finally the international singles. Plenty of them too. Although I left some out, because this is already far longer than anyone is willing to listen. I want to especially highlight Keven Louis Lareau’s single Not All Songs Have Been Sung. Kind of perfect 70s folk rock type of song. I bought it from Bandcamp some months ago, but now it’s also available for streaming. Another big one is the new Margo Cilker song. Can’t wait to hear her record later this fall. We also got a new J.E. Sunde song which is always a big deal. This time he is collaborating with MOMO. Lloyd Taylor-Clark released another gentle beauty, Erin Enderlin always rules my world, Mariel Buckley’s Sloan cover is perfection, long time favorite Danny George Wilson has a new one as do Bedouine, LadyCouch and Matthew McNeal. A lot of that singles gold is on the latter half of the playlist, because the first half was crowded with all the album tracks.

That’s all for now. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #148

Another week, another new music weekly.

A whole lot of good stuff out there this week. The imaginary album of the week award goes to the new Josienne Clarke record. This week we also got excellent new albums from BAJA, Elijah Ocean, Mike and the Moonpies, 10 Cent Stranger, Zach Bryson (or maybe this is a bit older), Suzie Ungerleider (aka Oh Susanna), The Killers (I can’t say I’ve previously listened to them all that much, but this new record seems to be absolutely wonderful), Beachwood Sparks (EP of early stuff), Wednesday, Damon & Naomi, Dan Whitaker, Jade Bird, Tiger Saw (another bit older one I missed at the time) and Watchhouse (previously Mandolin Orange).

The Finnish treasures this week are album from Palmpillows and singles from Sam Shingler and Liljankukka (b-side of last week’s single). OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #147

Another week, another new music weekly.

The album of the week is the new Mercy Bell album. All advance singles were great and I’m really loving this whole thing too after just a couple of spins. Other big album releases came from Leah Blevins, wor_kspace (EP, Finlay Macdonald is behind this), Andrea Von Kampen, Fenne Lily (EP, acoustic versions), Christian Lee Hutson (cover EP), Liam Kazar, Gary Hector, Jeffrey Alexander and The Heavy Lidders, Kississippi, Laura Stevenson, Summersets (EP). Oh yeah and out of spotify, there’s some big ones too like the new Marie/Lepanto album on Bandcamp. Lots of other exclusive goodies too, because it was Bandcamp Friday yesterday. Always feel questionable to make a spotify playlist after a Bandcamp day.

Only a couple of Finnish cuts, but quality is super high. There’s singles from Astrid Swan and Liljankukka. There was a new Kynnet song too, but it vanished somewhere. Maybe some hiccup with the release date and it become available sooner than it was supposed to be.

The song of the week is Jimi & Stan by Strand of Oaks. The song is great and the background story hits hard, because we lost our dear Luna earlier in the year for the same the reason that he lost his cat Stan. I quote him so I don’t mess up the story “In my grief I tried to imagine a Heaven that Stan so rightfully deserved. And that Heaven is Stan hanging out with Jimi Hendrix going to shows and having a warm spot to look at the galaxy. I wanted the song to be a joyous sendoff for my sweetest buddy”.

Another big one is the new song and album announcement from Charlotte Cornfield. I’m also very fond of the new songs by Adia Victoria, BAJA, Aimee Mann, Summer Dean, Elijah Ocean, Charley Crockett, Icarus Phoenix, Christo Graham and James McMurtry. Again just to name a few. OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #146

Another week, another new music weekly.

Still paid more attention to NHL and the free agency, but thankfully that stuff starts to slow down after last thursday’s LeBrun goes to cottage day. Or maybe Eichel gets traded when I write this. Anyway, here’s the release round up for this week.

There’s not one that jumps clearly ahead of the pack for me this week, but there’s definitely plenty to love and cherish. We got new albums from Durand Jones & The Indications, Yola, Jeremy Squires, Tobacco City, Cecilia James(EP), Charlie Parr, Ryan Curtis, An American Forrest (I think this has been on Bandcamp for a while, but now on Spotify too), Jesse Daniel, Langan, Frost & Wane, Bory (EP) (thanks to Mo Troper for recommending this pop beauty, check this one out pop kids), Son Volt, TORRES and Ric Robertson.

Finnish cuts this week are the single from The Lovematches and an album from Pelkkä Väliviivä (mostly spoken word in Finnish and that’s why I put it as the last song).

Last but not least the international should be hits. Exciting news came from Emily Scott Robinson. She got a record deal with Oh Boy Records and released a wonderful first single from an forthcoming album. Belaver and Robert Ellis released a single together. It’s a song by Belaver that also the producer of the forthcoming album Robert Ellis recorded. I probably should put Belaver’s own version here, because he wrote the song. However, I love the voice of Robert Ellis, so I went with that one and will get to the Belaver album in the coming weeks when more singles and eventually the album arrives. Also in love with that Riddy Arman song and then there’s much more like new treasures from MAITA, Mercy Bell, Dori Freeman, Garrett T. Capps, Grace Gillespie, BAJA, Ada Lea, Nico Hedley, William Harries Graham and so forth. Again just to name a few. These are all worth a namedrop, but you’ll find them all below. Oh yeah and that soul single from Thee Illusions is from January, but I just heard it and loved it.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

1. Durand Jones & The Indications – Ride Or Die (Private Space, Dead Oceans, 2021)
2. Yola – Barely Alive (Stand For Myself, Easy Eye Sound, 2021)
3. Cecilia James – Headrush (Different Ground EP, Cowgirl Boot Girl Recors, 2021)
4. Tobacco City – Never On My Mind (Tobacco City, USA, Scissor Tail Records, 2021)
5. Jeremy Squires – Unravel (Unravel, Blackbird Record Label, 2021)
