OCTA 18th Anniversary – China

Our anniversary celebration carries on in the Bay Area. I’ve been a big fan of San Francisco-based folk rock band China led by songwriter Michael James Tapscott since their first EPs. Their magnificent new album And Then Nothing Happened came out in February on Royal Oakie and China’s contribution to this online festival is a beautiful outdoor performance of album cut Crossing the Ohio. If you want to hear more of their exceptional songwriting and folk rock songs rooted in the West Coast, check out the whole discography over at bandcamp and/or those other music videos. Here’s the live version of Crossing the Ohio directed by Yasamine June.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – Vähäsarja

Next we meet up with one of my favorite Finnish songwriters Petri Vähäsarja who has released wonderful songs both with the band Suomen Zorro and as a solo artist. I would especially recommend his two solo records on Helmi Levyt. I love both wholeheartedly. His song for our anniversary week is a new one called Särkänniemen delfiinit. The video might be bit on the dark & blurry side, but it actually fits quite perfectly to this beautifully haunting and poignant song. And oh my what a song it is once again. Absolutely powerful in all its fragility.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – Haley Heynderickx

We are back in Portland, Oregon for a beautiful surprise impromptu kind of performance from songwriter Haley Heynderickx. She has been one of my absolute favorite songwriters during the last year or two and I’m super happy about this little concert she made for this anniversary week. Her festival number is an unreleased song that is currently called Dedicated to My Friend, Tre. After watching her awesome festival performance below, make sure to give a spin to her remarkable album I Need to Start a Garden that came out on Mama Bird Recording Co in March 2018.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – John Statz

Moving on to Denver, Colorado where Wisconsian John Statz currently resides. Well actually this great americana/folk singer-songwriter and long time friend is currently touring somewhere in the UK, but the good thing about our anniversary festival is that you can perform for us wherever you are at the moment. I’ve been a fan since the 2010 album Ghost Town and his music has been featured here several times over these past nine years. I’m thrilled to welcome John Statz to our stage to perform a wonderful brand new song called Travel On, Travel Well. Thanks for joining us and have fun out there in the UK.
