OCTA Weekly Playlist Episode #28

Another week, another weekly playlist.

A bit later than usual, because I was on small vacation trip and just got back. I even thought about leaving this for tomorrow, but in the end wanted to push this through tonight. Maybe a little less of this pointless rambling because of that.

The most important album release of the week for me is the new album from Jeremy Quentin aka Small Houses. I must admit that I haven’t even listened to it yet, because it wasn’t on Spotify first (is now) and I only had the iPad with me on the trip so couldn’t download it either. The digital version is available on his Bandcamp as name your-price-download. Other new album releases that find their way on my radar were from Cass McCombs, Deidre & The Dark, Bob Mould, The Lemonheads (covers album Varshons 2), Mercury Rev (revisiting Bobbie Gentry’s album with awesome guest vocalists), Chris Rawlins, Jessica Pratt, Michael Chapman, The Late Great, Mackenzie Shivers, Charlie Faye & The Fayettes, Henry Jamison.

There’s again a small Finnish language lesson in the middle. There was a new album excellent album from Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki and magnificent singles from Maustetytöt, M and Tanssiva Karhu (this last one is a few weeks old, but I missed it then). That song by Maustetytöt became a bit of an addiction and a good kind of earworm. They fully deserve all the hype.

The singles game was also strong in the international charts. Esther Rose’s single Blame it on the Moon was my favorite song of the week, closely followed by the new one from the forthcoming album Anna Tivel album. Piney Gir, Rod Melancon, Kashena Sampson, I Was a King and Robert Ellis were some other big favorites. As usual, I like each and every of these songs and could just easily namedrop them all. But let’s name one more, because Emily Scott Robinson’s song is more powerful than all the rest together.

That’s all for tonight. Sorry if there is even more mistakes and/or bad grammar than usually. Too tired to proofread this right now.

Update: Oh one more thing. I also started compiling my favorite Finnish songs of the year on one playlist called OCTA Finnish Songs of 2019. I probably won’t “promote” this, because I think it’s bad enough that I spam this weekly playlist every week. But if you only want the Finnish songs, there’s now this option too.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

Better Oblivion Community Center, Christian Lee Hutson, Dylan Rodrigue and Crane Like The Bird

Better Oblivion Community Center does not need an introduction, because by now pretty much everyone has heard of this new collaboration between Phoebe Bridgers & Conor Oberst. Their wonderful album is out on Dead Oceans and there’s a big tour on the horizon. This one actually hits Finland too and they will play at Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki on the 29th of April. Tickets are on sale now, so go and get yours, if you want to hear two magnificent songwriters sing together in beautiful harmony.

Oh and there’s actually three first class songwriters on the bill, because Christian Lee Hutson (who also plays in BOCC) is the support artist. Therefore I have to use this opportunity to repost his song called I Just Can’t Fucking Do It Anymore, because I love the song and have been desperately waiting for a new Christian Lee Hutson album since I heard it a few years ago.

Then a couple of new favorites to round up tonight’s little blog post. First up is Dylan Rodrigue from Los Angeles and his debut album Cat’s Game that came out on the 25th of January on Bad Paintings (UK/Europe) and Palomino (US). It’s pretty stripped-down and lo-fi, but still insanely powerful. Occasionally every stroke of the guitar just cuts straight through me. It’s imperfect in a good way and feels real and alive. It ranges from folk songs to raw indie rockers. I’m especially fond of Some Kind of Heaven and this song called Self-Love.

Staying in Los Angeles for the last entry. Kyle Crane has played with Neko Case, Daniel Lanois and lots of others but he also makes his own music as Crane Like The Bird. His new self-titled album saw the light of the day on the 18th of January. He has an all-star cast helping him and the album features folks like Ben Bridwell, M.Ward and James Mercer. The beautiful and moving song that can wrap up this little blog post is obviously the one that features Conor Oberst on vocals and tells a story of a snowboarding trip that Kyle made with his late father.

Twain, Caroline Spence, Cale Tyson & Charlie Whitten

Tonight’s small round up starts with the 2 new EPs from the legendary Twain. Alternator has been available digitally before, but New Miami Sound is entirely new addition to his catalogue. New Miami Sound is also sort of a Side C for his magnificent Rare Feeling album. The songs are from the same sessions, but didn’t quite fit on that amazing album. If you are new to Twain, the album Rare Feeling is probably the place to start. That record is everything, but these lovely EPs don’t fall far behind. Even during their dark and devastating moments, Twain’s songs somehow manage to feel warmhearted and full of empathy. The two EPs came out on Keeled Scales on the 25th of January.

One of my most anticipated 2019 releases is the new Caroline Spence’s album Mint Condition that will be out on Rounder Records on the 3rd of May. I still have to wait a few months for the album, but an awesome two song digital single Long Haul / Mint Condition did surface a couple of weeks ago. Both songs are winners, but here’s the album closer and title track Mint Condition that also features Emmylou Harris.

Cale Tyson takes a new direction on his new EP Narcissist. He has written some gorgeous traditional country songs in the past and on the last full-length he explored country soul horizons. This time he wrote a fragile and honest EP and recorded it in his bedroom. It’s stripped-down and vulnerable, but leaves a strong impression on the listener. Bonus points for being able to use the word “instagram” and getting away with it. Just shows that everything can work, if you are a good songwriter. This is definitely more indie than country and therefore some old fans might struggle. I don’t mind at all. These labels are nonsense anyway. This is really good, maybe even the best thing he has done. And that’s all that matters.

Let’s wrap up tonight’s round up post with the new video from Charlie Whitten. If you followed this little back in 2017, you know that I absolute loved his Playwright EP. The Weather Station album and that EP were by far the most important releases of that year for me. There’s a new 4-song EP on the horizon and the first outtake is available as a magnificent music video. Out Of This was directed by Anthony Simpkins from the GemsOnVHS fame. Insanely good and I can’t wait to hear the new EP.

OCTA Weekly Playlist Episode #27

Another week, another weekly playlist.

This one was a slightly slower release week on the album front, but the ones that did come out are brilliant. The long-waited new Tiny Ruins album leads the charge and was the most important release for yours truly. There are also excellent new albums from Blank Range, Abigail Lapell, Guided by Voices, Mandolin Orange, El Palacio de Linares and Deer Tick (this one is a collection of covers, different outtakes etc). The big EP of the week is the new one from Cale Tyson, but I also highly recommend checking out that BURLY EP.

There’s some fabulous stuff from Finland once again. Jerry & The Outlaws released a new album called Devil’s Cut and then there were magnificent new singles from Mental Market, Salaliitto and Since November. Oh and there’s also a song from the new Jukka Ruottinen EP that I missed a week ago.

And as usual, lots of awesome new singles. The trouble with always adding these is that when the album finally arrives, I might need to post a 2nd or 3rd favorite if I want to add something new. And on the release week, I kinda would like to post the song that I love the most. Of course, nobody other than myself really cares about these things, so it’s bit of a non-issue I suppose. I could again namedrop all of them, because they are on this list because I like all of them. Some key ones for me were the new singles from forthcoming Craig Finn, Yola, Rosie Tucker and Caleb Elliott albums (the Rosie Tucker one is a few weeks old, but I missed it then). LeAnna Eden was the completely new find of the week for me. Thanks to the excellent NC Rocks playlist for introducing this excellent song to me. Sofia Wolfson is also quite new find for me and I really this song from her forthcoming EP. And yeah, everything else also rules equally much.

That’s it for now I think. I start waiting for the Super Bowl. Oh and I’m on vacation this week, so I have a bit more time to listen to submissions than usually, if you want me to hear something. An album/ep download link is always the best possible and preferred submission method, but whatever is good for you.
