OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #172

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’m also on vacation from the factory day job. Which is nice. I hope I manage to write some blog posts too. No definite promises though. But first Super Bowl and then sleeping most of Monday because of it. Even before that, here’s the new music weekly. Still available on three different platforms (Tidal, Spotify and Apple Music).

A couple of really big album releases this week. The Delines is my album of the week, but that Big Thief album fully deserves all the hype it has received. Love them both. There’s plenty of other gems too. There’s new albums from The Cactus Blossoms, Anthony St. James (this is a 2021 release that is now also available on these evil streaming platforms), Jason Scott & The High Heat, Frank Turner, Carrie Biell, Gina Leslie (EP), Lotte Kestner, Spoon, Night Shop, Mr. Husband (also available on Bandcamp before, but now streaming) Wesley Bright, Devon Lamarr Organ Trio, Stephanie Lambring (this was here on 2021 when it first came out, but why not include it again now that she rereleased with Thirty Tigers), Rue Snider, Jane Bruce, Tomato Flower (EP), Allison Moorer (EP).

A bit short Finnish section this time around, but there is an excellent run of singles from Aava, Lake Huttula, Knipi and Torrances. I’m sure there had to be more.

So much to love on the international singles side of things. Dakota Hall Scott and John Calvin Abney can share the song of the week title. I’m a big fan of both and hearing the first singles from their forthcoming new albums made my week significantly better. Micah Schnabel’s new single that I bought from a Bandcamp a week back is also now streaming. That’s another one that matters a great deal to me. There’s plenty more though and I’m very much enjoying the new ones from Ian Noe, Spencer Thomas, Tejon Street Corner Thieves, Erin Enderlin, Devil’s Coattails, Carson McHone, Jo Schornikow, Dylan Rodrigue, Johanna Samuels, Apollo Ghost, Evan J Cartwright, Andy Shauf, Kyle Morgan, Sophie & The Broken Things, Reilly Downes and Madeleine Kelson. Well just to name a few. There’s gold throughout the way too long playlist. Like that new Willie Nelson treasure close the end.

That’s it for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It may feel pointless, but even just hitting that like button matters more than you will ever know. Hopefully some kind of blog posts next week, but we’ll see how this vacation goes. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. If you want to find the older ones I’ve moved them to the weekly playlist archive. So hit that link above and I’m sure you’ll find this playlist too.

Micah Schnabel, Mikayla McVey and Carson McHone

A new single from long time favorite Micah Schnabel? Well count me in for sure. Coin$tar is out on Bandcamp and I already bought my digital copy of it. Check out this moving picture of the loveliest thieves first and then hit the Bandcamp link for this and other gems from Micah’s song vault.

From last Friday’s single highlights to album highlights. One of them is definitely Mikayla McVey’s debut full-length Time Turns Everything that was released by Long Road Society. A beautiful and engaging album full of great songs. This one works best with headphones. Not that they are must. Here’s the music video for New Year along with another album cut On Naming (feat Twain). Hit the links on that Bandcamp to buy/listen the whole wonderful album.

Wrapping this little blog entry with something brand new, because the latest single from Carson McHone’s forthcoming Daniel Romano-produced album Still Life surfaced earlier today. It’s called Only Lovers and sound mighty good just like the earlier advance singles. The album will hit the stores and our hearts on the 25th of February and it will be released by Merge Records and Loose Music.

Dakota Hall Scott, Scott Ballew and Joshua Hedley

Major news alert! There’s a new Dakota Hall Scott song in this world and an album Bakersfield, CA will follow sometime fairly soon. I think I’ve read about early March release, but I’m not sure is that set in stone. The wonderful lead single is called All You Do Is Take and you can listen to it and pre-order the album on his Bandcamp page. Oh and if you haven’t listened to his 2019 (should-be) classic My Body Longed For the Summer, I suggest doing that immediately. One of the finest folk singer-songwriter album of recent years.

Another lead single that I’ve been loving lately is this beauty from Austin-based folk songwriter Scott Ballew. The song Blue Eyes is an outtake from his forthcoming album Leisure Rodeo.

Kicking this up a notch and wrapping this short blog entry with another lead single. This time from Nashville-based country songwriter Joshua Hedley who has signed with New West Records and is getting ready to release a new full-length in April. The gorgeous first single and title track Neon Blue is here now with an entertaining music video.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #171

Another week, another new music weekly.

A big week in music, because we have a new Erin Rae album in this world. Absolutely love it based on a few early spins and I don’t expect my feelings to change in the future. Josienne Clarke’s EP and the new album from The Reds, Pinks and Purples also matter a great deal to me. There’s plenty more though, which I will listen more thoroughly during the week. We have new albums from The High Water Marks, Ryan Allen (EP that has been on Bandcamp a couple of weeks, Matt Fockler, Mikayla McVey, Gold Light, Jana Pochop, Mitski, Carl Schilde, Cate Le Bon, Seafarers, Heal & Harrow, Marissa Nadler (EP), Love, Burns, Good Morning Bedlam and The Rave-Ups.

From Finland there’s new albums from Keidas, Rohkeat Kuvat and Ite Eerola. Plus a Kalevala themed various artists collection that features some of my favorite artists like Kielo Kärkkäinen and Laura Moisio. Then there’s also great singles from Pintandwefall and M.

And finally the international (should be) single hits. That Lucy Dacus single is fabulous and perhaps my favorite along with the new Joshua Hedley song. We also got gold from David Quinn, Caroline Spence, Scott Ballew, Dana Gavanski, Cactum Blossoms, Bastards of Soul, Young Guv, Ryan Dugre, Triptides, Arre! Arre!, Bastards of Soul, Jacksonport and many others.

That’s it for this week. I did write a few short blog posts this week. I’m not sure are such small things helpful, but I guess it can’t hurt either. Maybe I’ll continue. Don’t really know for sure. This new music weekly is still on Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. Choose the one you hate the least and buy some music if you are able to do that. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.
