Lee Fields & The Expressions + Durand Jones & The Indications

Still a lot of great 2016 albums that I haven’t even mentioned yet. I’ll quickly go through some before starting to work on those year end lists. I’ve had a bit of a soul phase going on for the past couple of weeks. I’m not a big soul expert nor own a huge stack of soul LPs and 45s, but every man/woman needs a bit of soul in their life in order to function as a living being. I rarely write about soul records, because I don’t have the expertise and there are better blogs to provide this information. However, it’s still a part of my music taste and therefore I wanted to share a couple of songs from the soul albums that I’ve had on heavy rotation lately. These are the new Lee Fields & The Expressions album Special Night that just recently came out on Big Crown Records and the self-titled Durand Jones & The Indications album that came out earlier in the year on Colemine Records (but which I only discovered a couple of weeks ago). Charles Bradley, Michael Kiwanuka and Nick Waterhouse are the obvious earlier soul-related favourites. The Frightnrs also seem very good based on my limited listening session albeit that’s a wee bit different and more rocksteady type of thing. Oh and I still haven’t heard the new St. Paul & The Broken Bones album. I’ll make a mental note of that and fix this criminal offence of not listening to St. Paul. That actually sums up my limited knowledge of 2016 soul, so feel to drop me hints if I’m missing out on something spectacular. Here’s Smile from Durand Jones & The Indications and Special Night from Lee Fields & The Expressions.

Strawberry Heritage – Overgrowth

I probably should be focusing on those end of the year lists like the rest of the world, but I think those will have to wait because there’s so much new music that I need to cover first. I did briefly mention Strawberry Heritage’s new album Overgrowth earlier in the fall, but a revisit is order due to reasons that a) the album is now out and available b) the album is incredibly good c) Lie With You is one of my favourite songs at the moment. Strawberry Heritage is Michigan-based songwriter John Hanson (accompanied by a large number of friends and musicians). I first came across his name some years ago when he made some great music videos for one of my all-time faves Frontier Ruckus. Somewhere along the way I found out he was also a songwriter and begun matching my heart with his songs. So far it’s going extremely well. New Rise had some songs I absolutely loved and same can be said about this new album Overgrowth. Actually besides being a match with the current folk-y type version of me, this would also appeal to that early 00s twee indie pop kid adaptation of me. So no wonder the album feels beautiful, warm & comfortable and I love to lie on the floor listening to it with the headphones on. This is Lie With You from the new album. You can buy/hear the rest on his Bandcamp.

Joshua Hedley – Don’t Waste Your Tears

hedley

I had to change a web host and I’ve spent the past week trying to get onechord.net back on track. There’s still some work to be done with the new layout and some images don’t show on old posts, but I think I can start posting some music as well. There’s a lot of things I still need to post before the end of the year lists in mid-December.

Nobody saw this coming, but I shall begin with some stunning country music from Nashville, Tennessee. Joshua Hedley has been playing with the likes of Justin Townes Earle and Jonny Fritz, so I probably should have found him a long time ago. Thankfully I finally did a few weeks ago and ever since I’ve spend a lot of time checking out some youtube videos and listening to this single Don’t Waste Your Tears over and over again. So brilliant and I can’t wait to hear the whole EP.

The Blackeyed Susans – Lover or the Loved (4 Track Single)

blackeyed

This new layout thing-y still needs some small adjustments. I try to find some time for that during the weekend. Meanwhile I’ll post some wonderful music, because that’s what counts far more than how this looks.

Australian band The Blackeyed Susans have a dedicated following in Finland thanks to Miettinen and his radio show Räkärodeo. That’s also how I found them. That’s actually how I found everything at the time. Räkärodeo is pretty much the foundation of my love for music and there would be no onechord.net without it. Sorry if I drifted away from the topic. It’s been a while since the previous The Blackeyed Susans album Shangri-La that came out in 2003. Sure we’ve gotten a glorious box set and a great solo album from lead vocalist Rob Snarski, but damn it’s still a sweeter deal to get some new music from The Blackeyed Susans. This deal will be delivered into our hearts on 2nd of December when they will release a new single Lover or the Loved. The-preorder is already up and running over at bandcamp and there’s also one beauty of a song available for you to cherish. This one below is The Good Life Never Ends, an old David McComb song, and it sounds absolutely perfect in the arms of The Blackeyed Susans. Oh how I love this voice. I can’t wait to hear the whole single in December and full album in 2017.
