Review: The Props – Mt. Karma

The Props: Mt. Karma (Prop Ranch Records, 2010)

The Props released their second full-lenght Mt. Karma a couple of months ago and it’s another good effort. They are heavily influenced by early Weezer and other 90’s rockin’ power pop and indie rock bands. I’m very much into that stuff and I do find the album enjoyable. The only major issue is that there’s nothing really drop-dead gorgeous on the album. It’s all good stuff, but the real killer tunes are missing and therefore it’s difficult to get extremely excited. Maybe it’s just the fact that there are far too few bands like this around and therefore one tends to hope that every new release would be the second coming of the giant pumpkin and can’t be totally happy with just good albums. In the end, Mt. Karma does contain a lot  of power chords, catchy choruses and good songs. That should be enough.

Review: Pernice Brothers – Goodbye, Killer

Pernice Brothers: Goodbye, Killer (Ashmont Records, 2010)

Joe Pernice’s debut novel was quite enjoyable, but he is still better as a pop singer-songwriter. Ok, it might be that he won’t reach the sky-high level of Overcome By Happiness, World Won’t End or The Scud Mountain Boys stuff anymore, but he is still more than able to create beautiful and harmonic pop music. Goodbye, Killer is his latest album full of captivating pop songs. Sometimes a little folky, always highly enjoyable. This time I prefer the slower material over the rockers (not that there’s anything wrong with the rockers). Especially Not The Loving Kind, Newport News and End Of Faith are slices of melodic pop heaven. This is not Joe Pernice’s greatest work, but it sure is very very good album once again and every pop fan should introduce their heart, mind & body to the whole Joe Pernice back catalogue.

Review: Mat D. – Plank Road Drag

Mat d. : Plank Road Drag (Mary Moe – Music Works, 2010)

Mat d. is a singer-songwriter from Iowa, US and he has written a very fine album called Plank Road Drag. This road trip is all about country, blues and old time music. Old-fashioned you might say, but in the end  good songs are always in fashion and Mat deRiso is certainly capable of writing those. My own favourite is probably the rough, raw and captivating bluegrass song Ribbon Of Dirt, but it’s certainly not the only good song. Most of the songs do hit the target and inject a high dose of  raw but beautiful americana into your veins. A couple of songs like the opener Resurrection Cadillac gets a little too bluesy for my own personal preference, but it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with those songs. That’s just not totally my kind of music. However, most of Plank Road Drag is my kind of music and it is indeed a very fine album.

Review: Joe Pug – Messenger

Joe Pug: Messenger (Lightning Rod, 2010)

Joe Pug is a songwriter. A mighty good songwriter. From Chicago, Illinois. With heart & gently phrased thoughtful words. Folk songs, country songs.. Well good songs.. No wait. Not just good songs. Pretty amazing songs. After hearing one of Not So Sure, How Good You Are and Unsophisticated Heart most singer-songwriters would form a phrase in their mind that goes “that’s a song I wish I had written”. Kind of simple and easy to approach, but still very detailed, carefully crafted and delivered with heart. I suppose Joe Pug’s Messenger also contains some songs that are only good and nothing that special. Somehow that bit faster pop-tinged material like the title song or Speak Plainly, Diana doesn’t make a significant impact on me. Thankfully they are in the minority and mostly Joe Pug excels in the art of wrapping moving words inside slow-paced beautiful melodies and sending them straight to the core of your heart. These days I’m so sure. That Joe Pug is a songwriter. A mighty good songwriter.
