OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #262

Another week, another year, another new music weekly. This is now a four platform monster, because I’m test driving Qobuz while I ponder my options. It won’t stay that way, because paying for four different platforms to make a hobby playlist doesn’t make a whole lot sense. Just wanted to give Qobuz a try. Some holes in the catalogue for sure, but the sound quality is wonderful especially when compared to Spotify. Anyway, I don’t really know what I’m going to do in the long run, but for the next little while this new music weekly is on Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music and Qobuz.

This first new music weekly episode of 2024 tries to cover the past few weeks that this was on hold. So not just this current week. There’s some mid-to-late December stuff too. I’ll get back to usual routine next week. I’m sure I simply forgot to include something, because I didn’t make notes when this was on hiatus. Feel free to send hate mail / recommendations to my inbox. There’s also like 5000 unread email submissions on the inbox and I probably won’t ever have time to go through them. Feel free to send it again, if you tried to reach me during the vacation.

John Craigie and TK & The Holy Know-Nothings is the album of the week. Austin Leonard Jones and Lee Baggett didn’t care about the eoty listmania and released great albums in late December. Big ones for me are also the brand new EP from Adam Remnant and December EP from Michael James Tapscott. Other album gems from December to today came from Fust, Justin Golden, Begale, Pinky Ring (EP), Drew Danburry and Wagging.

We already have a couple of awesome Finnish album releases too from Suosikki, Ippe Nilsson & The Narrows Bros and Santeri Sihvonen & Karjalan Konnat plus a very late great 2023 EPs from Rokki-Mari and iso pusu. 2023 album from Maiju Jouppi is first time on streaming services and therefore first time on this playlist too. Despite all those beauties, my favorite Finnish release of the week is the new single from Vähäsarja. Love that song. Another gem from the Helmi Levyt treasure vaults is the wonderful new Joonas Hauveli song. Kaunis veli is a new artist to me, but instantly really liked the single when I first heard it in December. Other beautiful Finnish singles came from Leija Lautamaja feat Pekko Käppi, Antti Autio, Ethel Suspense, Hiljaiset kadut and Kiss Disease.

The international single of the week is the new one from Willi Carlisle. There’s already a strong aoty candidate when that album comes out in a few weeks. Same goes for Frontier Ruckus too who also have a great single out and available. Other big favorites here came from The Lemon Twigs, Michael Feuerstack, Desiree Cannon, Vanessa Peters, Keven Louis Lareau (well these covers were on Bandcamp long time ago), Rosali, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Daniel Romano, Jeremy Ferrara, Paisley Fields, Charlie Parr, Joshua Ray Walker and so forth. There’s plenty, because this tries to cover a month of new music.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. If you or your friends are on Qobuz, listen this there too for the next month or so. It probably won’t there permanently unless I really fall in love with during the test run. Anyway, back here with another episode next month. Now time to focus on NFL playoffs. Love love love.

A few Bandcamp cuts for the lovely non-streamers:

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to other platforms. This means a few tracks might be missing from the from the other platforms, if they are not available there. Oh and there’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

Favorite Songs of 2023

Last end of the year list is my favorite songs of the year. Same story as with the Finnish ones. Mostly just a huge playlist for the onechordnet history books, because the on-going playlists will eventually move into 2024. I just selected a song of the year and then highlighted a few others that weren’t on the top of the albums list. This playlist is still very much in-progress and there won’t be any kind ranking outside the song of the year. The playlist is currently only on Spotify, but I guess I will add it to other platforms once it’s more ready. I know it doesn’t make a whole lot sense to post these when they are unfinished, but I just want to get these blog posts done and then ease into Christmas without a need to do anything else than adding songs to a playlist. The trouble with compiling these monster playlists is that somewhere along the way I lose the plot and I have no idea what I’ve added and what I haven’t. So I’m pretty sure I will just forget to add something that I really like.

Anyway, that’s all blog stuff for 2023. Thank you for following my new music adventure during the year. It means a lot. Happy holidays and I hope I see you back here when I continue sometime in January.

Spotify playlist

Slaid Cleaves – Next Heartbreak

Haley E Rydell – Midwestern Daughter

Charlotte Cornfield – The Magnetic Fields (Double Double Whammy)

Kitba – This Body (Ruination Record Co)

Willi Carlisle – When the Pills Wear Off (Signature Sounds Recordings)

Favorite Song of the Year:

Jeffrey Martin – Red Station Wagon (Fluff & Gravy Records / Loose Music)

Favorite Finnish Songs of 2023

Finally very quick songs of the year lists. Just five favorites and then a huge playlist for the onechordnet history books, because the on-going playlists will eventually move into 2024. This playlist is still very much in-progress and there won’t be any kind ranking outside the top 5. I put a lot of stuff in the beginning that weren’t on the favorite albums playlist, because I love the songs and I didn’t want two playlists that are too much alike.

The playlist is currently only on Spotify, but I guess I will add it to other platforms once it’s more ready. I know it doesn’t make a whole lot sense to post this when it’s unfinished, but I just want to get these blog posts done and then ease into Christmas without a need to do anything else than adding songs to a playlist. The trouble with compiling these large playlists is that somewhere along the way I lose the plot and I have no idea what I’ve added and what I haven’t. So it’s entirely possible that I will just forget to add something important. Anyway, here are the first five. Four first were pretty obvious. On the fifth spot there could have been 87 equally good choices, but went with Krypta because that’s a song I’ve listened a ridiculous amount of times. A bit of bending the rules there too, because I struggle to pick the favorite song from Hattara and Kristiina.

5. Krypta – Vala (Svart Records)

4. Sepänkadun Köyhät & Nöyryytetyt – Aittaluodon tehtaat (Panama-levyt)

3. Hattara – Filmi / Helle (Cotton Candy Company)

2. ITE EEROLA – Pehmeelle pojalle (Panama-levyt)

1. Kristiina – Vain hetki oltiin / Palavan rakkauden aika (Humu Records)
