OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #235

A big release week, because we have the new Kassi Valazza album out and available. Love it so much. It might be a bit too early, but it feels like it’s my favorite album of the year so far along with the Dean Johnson album that came out few weeks ago. Kassi Valazza will also perform in Finland in July. Tampere, Nykarleby and Mariehamn to be more precise. I’m really looking forward to the Tampere concert on the 14th of July. Other big album releases of the week came from Chris Staples, RF Shannon, Shirley Collins, Jim Ghedi & Toby Hay, Panic Pocket, Radiator Hospital, Lyndsay Stone, Gia Margaret and Leeann Skoda (EP).

Rosettes 7″ single is the Finnish highlight of the week. Other beautiful Finnish things this week are singles from Waver, Jukka Nousiainen, Rakkaudella Janne, Tinyhawk & Bizzarro and Raivo Jackson.

Steven van Betten made the international song of the week. Such a beauty. Made me cry a bit. Other big early faves came from Leah Senior, Adeem the Artist, Caleb Stine, Teenage Fanclub, Luka Kuplowsky, Buck Meek, Sam Burton, Smug Brothers, David James Allen, Tommy Prine and so forth. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. There might or might not be a small break now. I have a bit of vacation starting on the 2nd of June. The plan was to go to STHLM Americana festival, but unfortunately that was cancelled. Now I have to rethink what to do and when. Which might mean there’s no new music weekly next weekend and/or the weekend after that. If I have time, I might do it but I thought I won’t force myself. Just don’t want to have the burden of this hanging over me while I plan the vacation. So the next one might be on the the weekend of 17-18th of June unless I discover that life is sweeter without this crazy project. I doubt it. If I miss a couple weeks, I try to cover the new music of those weeks too at least to some extent. I guess one thing I could try during the next few weeks is the sort of on-going new music playlist with daily new music additions to the streaming platforms (without a blog post). I sort of like this current method that has a start and an end and some kind of song order / flow, but it might be time to try less time consuming way of doing a new music playlist. This might be a decent time for that. Anyway, that’s all for now. Back either week 22, week 23 or week 24. Love love love.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #234

Here we are again. Except not on Apple Music. Last week was the final week there. Had to cut some costs so that this crazy hobby project don’t cost me too much money. So just Spotify and Tidal for now. My apologies for the few people that followed me and/or the playlist on Apple. Actually I think I might take a bit time off during the summer altogether and see how I feel about this after a small break. At least next week is still business or well hobby as usual, because there’s the Kassi Valazza album and a whole lot more.

The album of the week is the new NQ Arbuckle. That title track carried me through some dark nights during the covid times and now few years later we have a whole new beautiful NQ Arbuckle album. I had to start this one with Love Songs for the Long Game, because I love that song so much. I’ll put something brand new and wonderful from the album to the next episode. Whitney Rose and Robert Ellis round up the big three of the week for me. Remnose is a new one for me, but loved that on quick listen. I will investigate that more during the next week. Then there’s also new greatness from Nicholas Jamerson, The Milk Carton Kids, Opal Eskar (EP), Steady Hands, Chris Velan, Brittain Ashford, Califone, Mega Bod, Bob Martin, Shelley Short (EP) and Lila Tristram (EP).

From Finland there’s an album from Metsäheikki, an EP from Escape Whale plus singles from V.Härkönen, Lala Salama, Kaino Kim Vieno, Eerie Deer, Keidas and Kari Tapiiri.

And finally the international singles. Anna Tivel has another tremendous b-side from the Outsiders sessions. I think that’s my song of the week here. Other big faves came from Lauren O’Connell, Laith, Max Bien Kahn, Ryan Curtis and Kitba. Also dig the cover magic from Lydia Loveless & Jason Hawk Harris. Just to name a few as usual.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters, if you want this to continue. Back next week for the Kassi Valazza album among other things. Love love love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #233

A bit behind schedule due to NHL and Eurovision song contest. Probably missed a lot too, because I didn’t have a lot of time to listen to new music.

New Abe Partridge is the album of the week. A lot of great stuff on that record. Charlotte Cornfield is high on my list too. Really love that song called The Magnetic Fields. Can’ wait to dive deeper into the album. This week we also got most likely awesome albums from Nathan Xander, Reyes (EP), Vanity Mirror, Wila Frank, Alfie Firmin, Sumos, Taylor Knox, Jeffrey Silverstein, Richard Allen, Dogwood Tales (EP), L CON, Kevin Coons, Emma Frank, John Southworth, Symphony Orchestra, Elijah Ocean (EP), Guy Capecelatro, Chris Decato & Friends (this has been on Bandcamp a while), John Hollywood, Libby Rodenbough and Parker Millsap.

My favorite release (and song) comes from Finland this week. This is of course the new Söpöily-EP from ITE EEROLA. I love the whole thing, but my personal favorite is the song Pehmeelle pojalle. I instantly fell for this one when I heard it live earlier in the year and now I’ve had the recorded version on repeat for days. Other Finnish gems of the week are album from Maa ilmasta, EP from Pelko and singles from Ville Rauhala, Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki, Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Rami Vierula, Havut, Nina Kaitaranta and Kärmes.

International song of the week is the new Margo Cilker single, Other early faves came from Kacey Johansing, Jobi Riccio, Brennen Leigh, Jake Nicoll, Jason Eady and RF Shannon. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. I hope I didn’t forget/miss too much. Feel free to send reminders / hate mail. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love and happiness. Back next week for another episode of this crazy new music project.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #232

What a great release week when it comes to albums. A really big three here from CARLENE, Dean Johnson and Michael James Tapscott. They can share the album of the week honors this time around, because I love them all so much. Those CARLENE singles have been so amazing and now there’s a beautiful folk album too. That Dean Johnson album has been a long time coming. I remember a few of these songs as Lowman Palace versions from 2017 and after that there’s been a bunch of gorgeous video performances too. Not to mention seeing most of my Portland/Seattle faves always praising Dean along the years. Great to have the album here and on my favorite label in the world too. I have to pick a vinyl too once they are available, because this easily fullfills those almost unfairly high expectations. Michael James Tapscott is a long time fave and the new album is again wonderful. Elephant Micah there too on one track, which is a nice bonus. There’s a whole lot more too. A few of these next ones are easily album of the week caliber too but this was a crowded week. There’s new albums from Michael Cormier-O’Leary, Greg Mendez, Jesse Remnant, Ruby Oland, Angelica Rockne, Eilen Jewell, Zach Aaron, Rodney Crowell, Thorsten Nesch (EP), SnarskiCircusLindyBand (EP), Amos the Kid, Durand Jones, The Golden Roses (cover EP), Dolour (EP) and Virgin of the Birds (EP).

A bit less crowded on the Finnish side of things. The almighty Sur-rur has a new compilation of unreleased stuff. Physical release was a few weeks back, but it’s now on these evil streaming platforms too. There’s also an album from Kissa and single gold from Inginmaa/Hypnomen, Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva tilanne, Jonna Tervomaa, Samae Koskinen, Sir Liselot, Lapsuus, Raivo Jackson and Slack Bird. Also revisiting last week Ne Galaktiset and Kalevi Suopursu albums at the end of the playlist.

The international song of the week is the new single from Corinne Sharlet. Oh my what a beauty of a song. Also love the new songs from Beth Bombara, Leah Senior, Anna St. Louis, Whitney Rose, Summer Dean, Turnpike Troubadours and Dogwood Tales. Again just to name a few. Too early to say which of these will become long time friends.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters a great deal while I ponder the meaning of life and this playlist. This is still on Spotify, Apple and Tidal. I think I will drop at least Apple in a few weeks. Sorry about that, but it doesn’t make sense to pay for me to pay for many streaming services just to make another playlist. Anyway, lots of love to everyone. Next week is a Söpöily-viikko and therefore I already know my favorite song of that week and possibly the whole year. Tune back here next week to hear it. Love from a distance.
